The Israeli military echelon has recommended not opening the Rafah crossing until Hamas returns the bodies of the captives, pending a final decision by the political leadership. At the same time, Israel has decided to reduce the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip,

We are going to do what we are going to have to do to keep people safe, and free, and capable of making decisions for their own future.

But we must not keep making that same mistake.

Now we are in a situation where the only political language that we have for opposition runs toward repression, where our leaders are talking about us the way that our leaders talked about people in distant lands.

We are here because we did not fix the violence in our hearts.

I also need to add the violence we are doing in the form of rapidly worsening environmental damage as a result of our outsized use of fossil fuels.

Violence is *never* free. It *always* carries a cost.

Everyone who complains about countries sending refugees to the US needs to grapple with our role in creating those refugees: funding paramilitary organizations in those countries, overturning democratic elections because the leader put in charge was too communist.

I say all of this from a country that feels like a powder keg: we are a powder keg because we have told ourselves the lie, over and over, that the key to peace is enough violence against people who are too different.

The greatest difference we could make to our future generations is not…any of the shit we hear people saying about tech.

It is learning how to care for each other enough to create and hold a real, lasting peace.

9. As a species, we have figured out war to an astonishing degree. We are still working on the ability to hold peace.

Real peace requires self-determination and justice. It requires trusting that differences do not make us enemies.

8. We are living in a world that was formed by violence, and more violence, and yet more violence, and those echoes are still reverberating.

We will not achieve real peace by refusing to recognize active fault lines.

7. (In tension with 7) The people who are most responsible for ordering the commission of violence are most shielded from retaliation.

6. There is no such thing as free violence. All violence harms the wielder.

Every time someone tries to sell you on the idea that there is something we can do, without cost, that harms other people, realize that they are lying to you.

5. Just because the other guy is using indiscriminate violence does not mean you are justified in doing the same.

4. Violence is very rarely the correct answer, and usually only because another party has left you with no non-violent alternative.

Please note that this includes people using the threat of violence to rob you of basic human dignity, rights, and self-determination.

3. Whatever you’re planning to do to bring people around *after* you fight a war, so you don’t have to murder millions of people in cold blood?

Consider doing that first.

2. A war without a specific military objective is inherently a forever war.

If you fight a war with the expectation that you will simply kill all people who you believe disagree with you, the war will be long and bloody and genocidal.

(It is my personal belief that the US government agrees with me that violence is self-replicating and have chosen to stoke violence on purpose; language to the contrary is posturing for the masses who don’t want a forever war.)

Just FYI, here are my personal beliefs on the use of large scale violence.

1. Violence tends to be self-replicating, and so should be avoided as much as possible.

All violence has the potential to entrench itself.

What The Hell Is Going On, a thread:

I’ve seen some thinkpieces and posts about Portland protests that fail to understand the long-term hyperspecificity of Portland culture/humor, and frame it as a sort of shitposting meme-pilled ironic thing. Which is wrong.

So I’m gonna give you my breakdown.
