Editorial, The Vancouver Daily Province, May 17, 1933:

Hitler Is Reasonable

Germany has spoken in the voice of her Brown-shirt Chancellor, and the word of Hitler is unexpectedly conciliatory and reassuring. Compared with what was feared, the speech of the dictator to the Reichstag today was almost a good omen. If we have to use the language of caution and qualification about the statement of Germany's intentions, it is no more than we should have to use of any statesman's word in the present confusion of world politics.
The point is that Hitler's peech is an appeal rather than a threat. He appeals to the nations for a square deal for Germany, and he says it can only be a new deal about the peace treaties. He might have made it -- he was almost expected to make it -- in the voice of bitter defiance. Instead, he makes it in the name of justice and peace.
