Looking forward to this launch. Some great writers lined up from the (former) Observer.

My birthday notwithstanding, tonight at the "House of Guinness" premiere has reminded me of two things. Firstly, even though I'm out of practice, I'm good at what I do. Secondly, there's no feeling in the world quite like going to work - and it doesn't feel like a job to begin with. I'm very lucky.
Trump’s closing in on a #TikTok deal. But this isn’t about saving an app - it’s about who gets to own Gen Z’s attention. New audiences vs old empires. And #journalism sits right in the crossfire.

I've spent some time thinking about #journalism and the business of news. Content wheels are starting to wobble, content funnels are clogging up, and platforms are colliding - and is “maximalism” really the next big thing?

The latest edition of "The 201" has more:

It sounds like some serious numbers in and around central London for today's protests. I've made a conscious decision to take some time away from public order as of late, but will be back in the middle of things when the time is right.
The really interesting thing I’ve noticed at #FOMT25 is how the attitude and tone in discussions about AI and #journalism have shifted noticeably over the past 24 months. Plenty to chew over coming away from today.

Many thanks to @pressgazette.co.uk for the invite and another fantastic event.
I'm heading over to the @pressgazette.co.uk Future of Media Tech Conference this morning. It's a very AI-heavy agenda but that's perfectly understandable, given how AI is driving so much disruption in and around #journalism. I'm looking forward to mainlining coffee on my arrival...

I stepped out the door after a tip-off close to home, and after mostly avoiding my news instinct for the last few weeks, I found a car and a bus had collided at the foot of my road...

A quiet few days away hiding in North London. This sunset set the mood, thankfully.

Here's something a bit different. We've been reporting from Edinburgh to try to get to the bottom of a mystery in London. Princes Street is the Scottish capital's most famous shopping street — and it's gaining the *exact same* tatty gift shops as London. www.londoncentric.media/p/edinburgh-...

Plus: A chat with the Transport for London boss running the tube strike negotiations — and how the "hardworking businessman" putting up flags in south London tried to scam an insurer.

You mean until the introduction of "limited functionality"
12 months ago I warned against relying on subscription-based video tools for #journalism. Now Adobe Rush is on the way out, just as I predicted. Content creation platforms shift fast. Your skills need to be transferable & you need to be adaptable. Also, and much more importantly...

I told you so.

Something a bit more personal on 'The 201', but one that's still important to talk about nevertheless: survivor's guilt. I've struggled with it since my diagnosis, and this summer it's been particularly difficult.

But every problem has a solution.

Oh good it's September
Journalists are asked to bear witness to trauma, conflict and tragedy every day, and the weight of that doesn’t just disappear once the story is filed.

Burnout, vicarious trauma and constant online threats go hand in hand with #journalism in 2025.

I will say, logging out of X / Twitter was a massive step forward in this. The deluge of misery and hate there was too much.
A small note of thanks for the messages I've received since posting this. My GP set up a referral for me later this week, so it's all in hand.
I paid a visit to @stbrides.com on Fleet Street - the journalists church - earlier today. It's good to sometimes just sit and gather your thoughts a little, especially when you sense you might be struggling.

Putin may be hoping that the longer he can drag this out, the more likely it becomes Trump walks away to avoid a no-deal humiliation.
Europe would then have to step up & replace US arms
This is far from close to an end.
Some things are so easily verifiable it's practically effortless - especially if you've been doing it for long enough, and even more so on the other site.

The left needs to be better than this.
The data doesn't lie. Increasingly more people now get their #news from YouTube than from TV, especially younger audiences.

That shift isn’t just about the platform. It’s about behaviour, culture, money, and what #journalism looks and sounds like in 2025...
