New (academic) year, new me — well, new title, anyway. I promise to uphold the standards you’ve come to expect from the Samuel T. and Fern Yanagisawa Regents Professor in Astronomy.

Yes, I know we just went for a walk. But what about second walkies?!?

The way everything is going, I’ll definitely take it: this is the best news I’ve had in a while 😂.

Good for MIT! The Trump administration's politicization of the grant process has harmed science. Cc: @mbkplus.bsky.social.

It's more difficult than is often acknowledged to be the first to act in situations like this; it's an important move from MIT (along with a good statement). Hopefully this will give momentum for other institutions to reject attempts to control them in unacceptable ways.

MIT rejects "compact" proposed by the Trump administration.
MIT prez wrote: it "would restrict freedom of expression and our independence as an institution" and "is inconsistent with our core belief that scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone."

This is an op-ed from one of the framers of the Trump administration’s compact with universities. Regardless of whether one believes the litany of accusations the beginning, the idea of the compact and its mechanics are completely bad faith: [1/2]

In addition to what Mike says the op ed is deeply dishonest insofar as it omits the most troubling parts of the pact, which require universities to “abolish” departments that “belittle” “conservative ideas,” or face a clawback of all funding - with all of this determined unreviewably 1/

The admin has singled out 9 specific schools and said they can have preferential access or risk no access at all. This is not about merit, then, or ensuring all universities adhere to an imagined set of principles. It’s a divide & conquer strategy to put some schools under the administration’s thumb

Biggest takeaway from this TNF game, besides Jaxson Dart looking surprisingly sharp? Al Michaels had lost not just one but several steps. Still smooth much of the time but he should probably hang up his spurs.

A lot to dislike here, but (1) what does 'early' mean in this context? and (2) is 'double the rate' compared to people circumcised 'late' or people who are not circumcised?

RFK JR: There are many other confirmations -- there are two studies that show children who are circumcised early have double the rate of autism. It’s highly likely because they are given Tylenol
