I love the concept of being so anti-porn that you build an app about porn so you can talk about porn & its badness all the time, and even interject your porn-bad thoughts about porn into situations and conversations that have nothing to do with porn.

JFC. Ron DeHaas, founder of the Christian antiporn app Covenant Eyes, has stepped down from NCOSE after his 38-year old son was charged with sexual abuse of a child.

Covenant Eyes is the app used by House Speaker Mike Johnson and his son to monitor each other's internet behavior.

#13 The Thing (1982) One of John Carpenter's absolute best & the reason why I can never resist a horror movie set in any sort of isolated outpost. Also people don't talk enough about how hot Kurt Russell is in this movie.

This had a little more going on than I expected from a Netflix "thriller"
promo image for the movie I Came By, showing an older man wearing a suit looming over a superimposed image of a younger man in front of an elaborate door with a staricase. Movie title is at the bottom.

A billion dollars is the socio-political equivalent of a loose nuke, and we should work as ruthlessly and diligently to prevent the acquisition of the former as we do the latter.

“The problem with billionaires isn’t that they’re hoarding money that would otherwise pay for a Scandinavian social utopia. It’s that their money has become a source of wildly distorted political power that allows a few men with extremist views to wreak havoc on the rest of us.”

Really feel like all this man wants to do is talk about penises & everything he's done so far has just been laying the groundwork for him to talk about penises nonstop

RFK JR: There are many other confirmations -- there are two studies that show children who are circumcised early have double the rate of autism. It’s highly likely because they are given Tylenol

#12 The Descent (2005) There are about 5 movies on this list that, depending on my mood, I will claim as my favorite & one of them is The Descent. A perfectly paced meditation on what it means to be a monster.
movie poster for 2005's The Descent. A large central image shows five woman posing together in a way that causes them to appear as a backlit skull. The movie title is in white text at the bottom.

It’s never simply utopian to believe that our societies can be (and have been) organized differently.

Transactional modes of relating to one another alienates people from each other and from the land.

A culture of care and stewardship can change that.

it's awesome* that food shopping has devolved into a game* of "ok who's been the least fash this week that still stocks the seven things we need?"

Recently I read somewhere that because driving is a complex & potentially dangerous activity our brains need extra focus to handle it & one of the ways they achieve that focus is by essentially turning off empathy.

Not my original saying, but no one becomes a better person behind the wheel of a car.

Cars turn people into a*holes. It's a syndrome.

#11 The Wicker Man (1973) Folk horror has been back in vogue for at least a decade now but there's still nothing like The Wicker Man. Songs! Animal totems! Weird ideas about virginity! It feels very silly right up until it doesn't.
movie poster for The Wicker Man showing a huge "man" made of sticks with a ladder leading into his middle. Behind him are flames.

#10 Mandy (2018) In which Nicolas Cage out-Nicolas Cages himself. If I were a billionaire I'd give Panos Cosmatos $100 million and free reign.
movie poster for Mandy, featuring a blood-covered Nicolas Cage wearing a tactical vest & a chainsaw slung over his should. In the background there are images of a woman's face and a burning car.

Well I say letting the wealthy continue to vacuum up all the wealth in the world is killing society and the planet we inhabit.

October book #1: The Unicorn is Iris Murdoch's take on the 1960s dimestore gothic romance. This is a book about about a bunch of weirdos trapped in a stately home between a sea cliff & a deadly bog. If that isn't enough to sell you, everyone is secretly gay & constantly chugging whisky 5/5
paperback copy of Iris Murdoch's The Unicorn on a wooden table. The book has unique rounded edges and the cover shows an illustration of a woman lying in an elaborate blue & purple canopied bed.
