Baltimore begins budget hearings this week.

Five years ago, in the wake of George Floyd's murder, dozens of people signed up to testify on the police budget.

The husband and I sat down and wrote this as written testimony. It remains relevant: warskeptic.com/2020/06/05/t...

This is great! Thank you Councilman Glover. Now we need the rest of them to do this sort of commute, regularly, in all weather, to see what our students endure every day.

This is our last year with city schools. Our kid has been a bus rider since 6th and they are DONE. I can hardly blame them. /End

I've challenged council members and @mayorbmscott.bsky.social to ride with students. I'd love each councilperson to pick 4 students in their district and ride with each quarter for a full week to and from.

Note no-shows, the rain, dark, robberies at stops, harassment, fights along riders /5

We say it is a meritocracy but it isn't wholly so. If you live in Bolton Hill or Roland Park, there's a MS with programs to give you a substantial leg up for HS entry. If you don't, you can choose: a long commute, at unlit, unsheltered stops for your 12 yr old or know they'll be less competitive /4

Because we concentrate higher performing schools (eg those with higher graduation rates) in just a few neighborhoods, students cannot equitably access opportunities where they live.

We make many students choose: your sleep and neighborhood or your education, but not both. /3

Here's the latest numbers @zekecohen.bsky.social

We continue to demand our young people participate in a school choice process that requires students to commute -- often in excess of 45 mins OW -- on a system that has among the poorest reliability in the nation. /2

The Baltimore City Council passed a bill earlier this year to study chronic absenteeism (25-002). I submitted written testimony on a major factor being MTA, known at least since BERC published a large transit study nearly 10 years ago.

A decade on, here's how the commute is for my kid. /1

More than half of Baltimore City high school students are chronically absent. go.boarddocs.com/mabe/bcpss/B...

@baltcityschools.bsky.social Can you explain why the Weapons Detection System was removed from the Safety and Wholeness Committee meeting? The agenda does not say amended or updated to indicate the removal.

In the Baltimore Sun today we ask Governor Wes Moore to cancel Avelo Airlines' contract with BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport. He can do it today. It doesn't require the assembly. It will help stop ICE & help our patients and neighbors.

Please share widely.

How Wes Moore can deal a blow to Trump’s immigration agenda | GUEST COMMENTARY
Guest commentary: Gov. Wes Moore has a novel opportunity to undermine Trump’s immigration agenda by targeting an airline participating in ICE’s deportations.

Yesterday I was in Philly and got this sign (even though I'm not a constituent, thank you @pasenatorsaval.com and your staff who were delightful) at a community event.

Will be pestering my folks in 43A to make similar ones. You should pester your reps to put their name next to their values.
A black and white sign reading "No Secret Police" The back of the black and white poster with a section titled "Know Your Rights" and outlining actions to take. In the lower right it reads "Senator Nik Saval"

Me at our all staff right after the shutdown: so do we just keep going on [project] because we have no shutdown guidance?

That was approximately 9 hrs since it happened, which included all the hours normal people were sleeping.

Some of the folks today are also concerned about their older children and young adults with complex or profound need. Once you age out of child-serving systems (about 21), finding services for adults, including housing, can be wildly challenging and expensive.

I've learned a lot following your account. Happy to subsidize tickets for you and your partner. Let me know your Cash app/Venmo/whatever here or via DM

Hi @bmorecitydot.bsky.social is there a reason you're requiring sign in before users can participate in the survey? And why signing in with Google doesn't work?

It it horrible. I am sure it is aggravating my allergies and the air quality cannot be good.

Egregious typo aside: this is like 8% of students, city wide. But it isn't because 5% (!!!) of the total count of homeless students are at one school and 10% (!!!) are at just a few schools.
melissaschober.bsky.social
@zekecohen.bsky.social Substantial increase over six years of homeless young peolle, even as the total population of city schools has fallen slightly since 2019-2020.

Is this part of study on chronic absenteeism? Budget planning for FY27 and beyond?
