Baltimore begins budget hearings this week.

Five years ago, in the wake of George Floyd's murder, dozens of people signed up to testify on the police budget.

The husband and I sat down and wrote this as written testimony. It remains relevant: warskeptic.com/2020/06/05/t...

I would like to congratulate past me on scheduling matzah ball soup for dinner on what turns out to be a frigid, snowy Friday.

Pardon me? Did IDEA get repealed over night? This from the Baltimore Banner story on the closure of New Song Academy.

Acts are beliefs. Budgets are moral priorities.
I’ve written about a lot of horrible historical figures in American politics and I always get earnest questions asking “but did they really believe that?”

I get the curiosity but I tend to remind people what they do in public is vastly more important than what they tell themselves in private
I have no idea what Graham Platner's religious views are, but the way our culture is obsessed with trying to divine a person's "real" interior views, by definition radically private and unknowable, above and beyond external actions in the world, is a sign of how culturally Protestant we all are.

Take three to six months off entirely and then never work FT again. Every FT job I've ever had has said 40 but really it is more like 45, or 50, or more. It is nigh impossible to pursue interests/hobbies, work a FT gig, exercise, rest, and have time for family and community.

I'm tired.
Honest question: If everyone got Universal Basic Income, no strings attached, what would YOU do with it?

Man, I have such trouble with [insert commercial, usually employer-sponsored insurer here], can you help?

I work on Medicaid, so, no.
What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!

This is our Friday after Thanksgiving family tradition. We schlep books over, get new ones. Then home for reading before family movie night and hit chocolate.
Let’s swap some books

Giant project at work and have been up to 11 most nights since I got back from Italy. Just brutal.

Last night I threw in the towel and went to bed at 930. I must have slept oddly because my right shoulder is basically a block and has decided I definitely do not need to raise my right arm fully.

Worked MANY hours last week. Many, many deadlines and not enough hands.

Logged off F night, all of Sa. Took an embroidery/mending class today. Two hours to just be creative and experiment. Really needed that.

@mtamarylandalerts.bsky.social I know you had a cyberattack. But months later this is what the majority of the Silver buses look like.

And here's the Gold. Is it a 12 mins wait (fine) or nearly an hour (not fine).
November 23, 2025 at 6:15 PM
Oh good, another day in which none of the buses I am waiting on arrive anything like on time. Why should it take over an hour to get from Charles Village to Fells?
It has been months since the cyber attack at MTA. Here's what the tracker looks like at 1040 on a random Saturday. Will I wait no minutes, 10 minutes or nearly an hour for bus?

There is group of crows in the tree just outside and this man has been absolutely losing his mind for the last 20 mins.

Coworker: Is that ... Is someone crying?
Me, deep sigh: No. That's Peter.

Good to see Baltimore City finally moving to get door locks -- something the FBI listed as best practice after Sandy Hook more than a decade ago.

PCAB called for this several years ago. Instead, Baltimore City spent millions on flawed, AI-enabled weapons detection go.boarddocs.com/mabe/bcpss/B...
