I'm considering a little post series extolling the virtues of easy beginner #nativeplants 🌱 for the Mid-Atlantic because in March or April, a bunch of new folks will careen into this hobby (it's like clockwork) and it might be handy to have said posts for quoting.

I'll thread them starting here.
Up to 41 #nativeplants species sown 😳🌱 (a few out of frame here)

such a huge percentage of 47 content that reaches me, a person whose political media diet is mostly bsky, npr, and late night, is about messaging - his rambling about word choice etc. it's weird. I can't tell if it's him being weird, or progressive media being weird about what they notice/care about

The new kitten has become aware of where the mouse sometimes goes

What does it look like to deal with seeds of #nativeplants which are inside fruits? At this time of year, it means soaking the (dried) fruits to get the seeds out and clean them.

Here is one example. Read the alt text.

I soak dried fruits for at least a day to soften skins and pulp.

Because I'm a sicko I'm going to try this, and my rule is that I can look stuff up in my own iNaturalist observations but nowhere else. I also am not making myself use scientific names bc I'd insta fail.

Here goes.

In the interests of education, today we show a berry-laden plant that you might see in yards, along roadsides or in vacant lots - but it is not a native plant. This is ornamental pear (Pyrus calleryana), often called ‘Bradford’ pear. Over the last 20 years, it has become a pest. (1/2) #nativeplants

i am also very done with every single conversation about consumer choices being derailed by the what abouts

6. Pink skullcap moth

The caterpillars eat skullcap & it's pink. Couldn't find a common name in English so I made one up.

At least it's better than calling it the confused/the old lady/flabbled rustic/southern buttworm moth etc.

(Ok only the 1st 2 of those are real.)
