This is actually why I think you should make any of the food you regularly eat at least once because you'll have a much greater appreciation for the time and skill that goes into it or you'll realize you're being scammed

a big thing i learned about myself during covid is that i just want to buy a goddamned baguette from the store or the bakery, i literally never want to make the damned thing myself

Income transfers that make Scandinavian benefits look puny. Mandatory parental leave for everyone. Lower and more flexible work hours. Free or heavily subsidized group-setting care. A Manhattan Project for making pregnancy safer and easier (and maybe robo-wombs).

I try not to overthink this logical point too hard because it makes me sound nuts but it is... hard not to draw conclusions here, yeah

It has boggled my mind since I was sixteen that the moral hazard of driving does not weigh on literally everyone all the time.

I hate it! I don't want to risk ruining or ending someone's life just to get to the damn grocery store, but where I live, I have to, every day.

You can be the safest, most attentive driver in the world and still pose a massive risk to other road users. That’s because cars and car dependency are inherently dangerous.

This doesn’t mean you’re a bad person if you drive, but I do think that drivers should acknowledge their role in this system.

declaring that being religious allows you to have access to your own set of facts is a poison pill for societal tolerance of religion

Among the grossest traits of SCOTUS (and modern religions) is the complete rejection of psychology as a legitimate profession where it clashes with religion. A lot of them simply believe you can persuade people not to be gay, a thing that's never worked.

we as liberals don't actually need to cede the idea of military effectiveness to the right. we should point out that these meathead morons are going to lose us a fucking war.

So this is really it. We’re very close to a line being crossed that is going to be clarifying for a lot of people who have either not been paying attention or who have been in denial.

This morning, the Trump Administration’s Department of War gave me an ultimatum: call up your troops, or we will. It is absolutely outrageous and un-American to demand a Governor send military troops within our own borders and against our will.

The police are not an army and Pritzker isn’t the commander in chief of the police organizationally or structurally, and culturally/politically there’s problems with them doing what he wants anyway, and I don’t think it’s a good idea to let Trump dictate our feelings about our own politicians.

A good and useful article!

Today's article is about a form of bad-faith speech somewhat akin to bullshit, which I'm calling (because why not) wank. I don't quite think I've focused the ideas down as much as I can, but I think it says some interesting things regardless:
An essay on wank | deadSimpleTech
This captures well the uncomfortable, slightly disorienting feeling that wank creates when you're subjected to it, wherein you're expected to speak about and think about the statement as though it say...

My most carceral urbanist take is that getting to drive is a privilege, not a right, and there should be a one strike policy for things like child endangerment. If you manage not to seriously hurt anyone and you want your license back, maybe you can take driver’s ed again in six months.

A mom: “I’m completely burnt out from full-time work, parenting, nightly cooking, endless laundry, supporting my family of origin, tending to my partner, and creating fun enrichment for the kids. I’m exhausted and have no time for self-care.”

Everyone: “HAVE YOU TRIED QUITTING YOUR ONLY FUN HOBBY”

if literally any country on earth had responded to the imminent death of millions by saying "i think that shouldn't happen," then -- fine. the era of american hegemony is over.

but no one did that. that's still a need unserved. and if we abdicate in 2029 (or whenever), it will continue to be.

They‘re not groypers but they’re still popping out of the same stew. The groypers are losers who, in many ways, do aim for the 20th century form of fascism but are too lame and pathetic in their own ways to ever achieve it.

This is something different but just as bad.

Anyway this bugs me because this always-true gripe so swiftly overpowers attempts to have discussions about the interesting stuff. Sexual expression, far from a solved problem, duh, of course, we've had like, maybe a few decades generously where it's an open topic. More exists to be said!
emteef.bsky.social
Like I am pretty sure I can think of one movie (Brokeback) where the sex scene was a worthwhile scene. Mainstream film is just pretty bad at them, always has been, it's been that way since they've been permissible to show. Right?
emteef.bsky.social
It's definitely not generational, I definitely do think there are interesting (largely but not exclusively bad) things happening right now wrt sexuality and socializing and whatnot

And also has anyone ever actually NOT felt that there were too many too blah sex scenes in (mainstream) movies/TV?

In a functioning society we would observe that women with small kids are struggling to find work that fits around childcare and is sustainable.

And then we’d do something about that idk

american english effectively has a high and low dialect, in addition to its various regionalisms, and when people say "working class" they frequently mean that the person speaks Low American English in public appearances, and not anything else

This seems more like a problem with Ezra Klein than the Democratic Party. The actual Democratic Party is made up of Democratic primary voters, who largely do not and will not nominate anti-choice candidates.
anildash.com
Amongst the many, many other faults and follies of the party, perhaps the single most dangerous problem with the Democratic Party today is their incessant habit of reinforcing the idea that there is absolutely *no* principle that matters, no policy that is sacrosanct that they will stand behind.

The idea of running anti-abortion Democrats is sickening to me. That means killing women! That is what that means!
