TIL that when people refer to the Chicken Man in a Philly context they don’t necessarily mean the guy who got blown up in the Springsteen song. Sometimes they’re referring to a guy in South Philly who is famous for eating 40 rotisserie chickens in 40 days.

We simply don’t need this much Philadelphia sports happening at the same time

love the students who are academic enough to use and even overuse em-dashes but still type them as hyphens. ChatGPT would never.

I’m not on the search committee but if you have questions I can refer you appropriately

yessss I registered for this workshop at our teaching center so quickly
This roundtable session will make space to consider what it means to be “anti-AI” in a world where generative AI tools are becoming increasingly ubiquitous. Come share your own anti-AI stances and beliefs and discuss how they have played out in the classroom. Together, we will explore some prominent anti-AI strands of thought in popular discourse, journalism, and scholarship that support a position against the use of AI in education, then consider how these views may be marshaled to communicate your stance to students. We will conclude by considering some strategies for communicating your anti-AI stance in a way that leans less on deterrence and more on affirming student voices, embracing imperfection, and foregrounding the importance of struggle to the learning process. All Temple instructors and staff are welcome!

This makes me want to go to a game and I honestly only have a vague gasp of the rules of baseball

I’m looking forward to seeing them here, I’m sure my fellow Philadelphians will be characteristically polite and normal about this

Where are the piano majors going to take their naps if you don’t do this?

I finished the draft of my Schoenberg Reacting to the Past roleplaying game!! It requires a gavel, someone to sing Berg op 4, and 12-sided dice. Guaranteed to surprise!
A book manuscript entitle The Emancipation of Dissonance with several 12 sided dice.

I’m tempted to say effects without causes but maybe a better way of putting it is that a lot of it is cheesy as hell (perhaps due to its marching band heritage)

the Musikverein archive is out here still embodying the text/act divide: the archive of events is for "music lovers" while the archive of scores (not clear but that's what it is) is for "scholars"

I’m going to write a campus murder mystery in which someone is bludgeoned with Harvey Wedeen’s 1996 Great Teacher trophy
A very sharp and heavy trophy

honestly fair considering they are assessing this guy (with creepily colorized eyes)

This might be mean but........

Much of the music you get handed in wind band is extremely, egregiously bad. Holst is beloved for not being terrible. Would not make the first cut in an orchestra.
micaelab.bsky.social
try playing a band instrument. you will never be free of them.
