It was so good to be up at 梓書房 / paperbooks in Taichung yesterday to attend this event with writers Naomi Sím and Kiú-kiong, talking about their writing, our @windandbones.com book, Tâigael: Stories from Taiwanese and Gaelic, and the challenges of translating between minoritised languages.
Two women sitting in front of a laptop, holding microphones. Both have short hair and glasses, and have the air of being writers — which indeed they are! Shop sign with hand drawn image of two women's faces and a cat's face. Sign reads 梓書房 PAPERBOOKS. In the background is a lamppost.

Finally back after a 4 hour scooter drive from Smangus. Man, that place is so remote.
It also got hit really really hard by the typhoon rain I think. So many really old trees were completely washed out. This clearing used to be forested from what I remember. The oldest ones are still there though.

What do you think happens to your exports when the PRC invades Taiwan? Of your top 6 export destinations, 4 will be fighting each other, and the other 2 prolly inaccessible. 13 of your top 15 export destinations are Asian. What will your democracy and economy look like with 20-25% job losses?

It‘s useful these days to pay attention to where UK China policy goes awfully wrong.

This is a prime example. The plan to rely on Ming Yang for critical energy infrastructure (the UK‘s largest wind farm) is reckless. Especially since there are European alternatives.

Ming Yang says up to 1,500 jobs could be created if plans for the facility at Ardersier go ahead.

China’s authoritarianism is likely to intensify in the coming years. The international community cannot remain passive and wait for #Taiwan to face a crisis similar to #Ukraine. #Beijing has demonstrated a willingness to use force before, and history suggests it may do so again

And yet the president's national speech said nothing about demographics or immigration.

"The principal guns are the five new Armstrong muzzle-loading 7-inch guns. Though the Japanese shots had left marks upon every part of the fort, the guns are mostly still serviceable.
The warship anchored on the right is the German man-of-war “Arcona” which entered port on the day of the attack."
