I leaped forward, a move I had never known myself capable of, and then I was kneeling in wet sand, carefully lifting his head, mindful of his hair, cradling him in my lap so that I could bring my ear closer to his mouth. He did not react, nor did he show any sign of pain. The part of me yelling that I was too late, that I'd failed him, that I'd screwed up, again, threatened to overcome me when I heard it again. It was the faintest intake of breath, almost cut off by blood. He was choking, but he wasn't dead. Not completely.

#WIPWednesday for Working with the Wrong Tags Ch 3, in which Stede flies to his destination wedding and is fine, really.

Stede saw Ed nod, in his periphery, before he brushed a thumb over Stede’s knuckles. “You don’t have to. I’ll be here, whatever you need.” Ed wrapped his fingers around Stede’s with a gentle pressure, and Stede felt something like relief that he wasn’t going to have to be alone for this.

“Thank you.”

Stede was relaxing with the contact, taking peace and support from Ed, even as he knew how entirely trapped he was in this situation. He found himself grateful that his parents and Mary both had later flights because he knew he couldn’t have accepted this comfort while they were watching. He knew how his father would react to him hand in hand with another man, even in friendship, and he was glad he could have this moment without his father’s judgment.

Ed’s thumb was continuing to move, gently soothing him, and Stede finally felt the block of tension in his chest break apart. He could feel his lungs expanding, felt like he could finally get a deeper breath, but that breaking apart was allowing him to finally understand how flimsily he was held together. It was an armor of numbness, one he would have to don again in two days for the wedding, if he was going to make it through at all.
