One of the common misperceptions about ancient armies was that ancient soldiers were all Super Buff and as a result, ancient military equipment was very heavy.

So how heavy was ancient military kit (not as heavy as you think!) - a thread! 1/

Alongside "who built Hadrian's wall?", another great example of knowledge falling foul of 'common understanding' is scurvy.

The Royal Navy discovered the cure for scurvy, won the Napoleonic War, humanity then lost that knowledge without realising, then got saved by two Norwegian guinea pigs 🧵 /1

The Israeli genocidal forces have committed countless horrific crimes but the targeted killing of a doctor who had documented Israeli snipers specifically shooting children in the head, along with her newborn children, while her husband was getting their birth certificates, is the definition of evil
As humanity collectively suffers another terrible summer, I just finished reading "The Great Derangement" by
Amitav Ghosh. The book is an excellent & accessible explanation of challenges & paranoia preventing us from doing anything abt climate change, whether in action or creative expression.

Air conditioning is not a luxury - it’s life saving and makes it possible for people to remain healthy and alert in a warming climate.
Nearly 40 percent of schools in the U.S. were built before the 1970s, when temperatures were cooler and fewer buildings needed air conditioning.

Now, in many places, it’s getting too hot to learn. wapo.st/4aBDTr5

If 'never again' is the true purpose of studying the Holocaust and historical atrocities, educators and historians (myself included) have failed miserably. We have spent so much time focusing on the violence of 'others' that we ignored our own.
