I definitely have plenty of old and tattered T-shirts, but it is weird to me how some people have one specific outfit that they think is special and wear to every event for the past 10+ years. I wonder if they realize how obvious (and sad) it is?
Marge Simpson with a pink channel suit that she kept modifying to make it seem new but it was just the same dress she’s was trying to impress people with but everyone knew it was the same dress and they were not impressed, and in fact, felt bad for her because it was kind of pathetic.

Yes. Every now and again I'll find a discussion between like a baker, an artist, and a dog walker where they are throwing out "probability distribution" this and "markov chain" that. It would be a solid parody if it was intentional, but alas.

It’s amusing to see people that clearly have no technical understanding of how LLMs work pontificate on how they work. They’ve clearly picked up some of the appropriate language/concepts, but it’s uncanny valley level stuff where their use is off in subtle ways that expose that they have no clue.

Someone made the mistake of posting a Hasan meme in the group chat and wasn't really familiar with my game...
a screenshot showing a message from whatsapp indicating there are an additional 26 Hasan related memes that can be viewed by expanding the list.

Took a quick look at the code. Initial thoughts: 1) looks like claude rolled its own auth system instead of using something like axum-login. Not sure which is more verbose. 2) It wrote a bunch of config code that reads env vars, etc. Would have been fewer LOC with clap I think (bc of macros).

unsupervised AI coding is wildly verbose, it will almost always choose to bolt something on over taking a step back and fixing the roots of issues.

I was also using Claude in the VS Code plugin vs web ui with Gemini. That said, Claude seems to have performed much better. I hit session limit pretty fast and it took over 2 hours to get the app running tho. Still need to read through code; seems like a lot of rust LOC for a relatively simple app.
A `tokei` output:

Got Claude Pro plan ($200/year). Pro plan seems to be limited to Sonnet instead of Opus. Initial generated code DID NOT COMPILE. Fixes were in rust error messages (as is typical) and after about 2h20m or so app worked. Try to gen docker files for deployment: session limit reached; resets in 2h40m

Kinda funny that even some of my 100% NOT normie friends have so far managed to avoid any meaningful knowledge of Hasan. If only I could excise the part of my brain that makes internet drama a special interest.

Not gunna lie: passkeys are pretty awesome.

I moved my systems programming class to Rust in Spring 2020 along with all (99%) of my own programming. I came from Ruby, and Rust gave me Ruby vibes. Reality is there is a big upfront learning investment for MASSIVE payoff. And I don’t even code for a living.

Inference’s cumulative energy usage is multiple orders of magnitude more than training, but ya. The issue with this experience is that it was all time lost. The program never even compiled and I spent a few calories attempting to fix things as well. Will try again with other models; maybe better?
mrjimmyblack.com
I will check them out and report back. Gemini has gotten massively better over the past few months, but considering they are still playing catch up, generating decent rust code is probably way down on their priority list.
mrjimmyblack.com
Ya. Rust is going to be an extremely low resource language compared to probably everything else. I also have a very strong suspicion that it is “hard” for models to deal with the borrow checker and the heavy use of generics considering the generated code I’ve seen spit out.
mrjimmyblack.com
How is it a bad comparison? This is how science works. In fact, the more you do an experiment, the more likely you are to find a spurious significant result. And even then, no meaningful link has been found over many years.

You also had no clue what I read or didn’t.

How many times do you need to observe the sun rising in the east and setting in the west before you believe it will do the same thing tomorrow?
mrjimmyblack.com
There are dozens of papers that have been published in the past two years on this. Sorry that you aren’t up on the literature, but it’s not an open question.
mrjimmyblack.com
Idk if it’s rust or something else, but there is really not a single line of generated code that is useful. Complete waste of time and however many trees I burned.
mrjimmyblack.com
Tried to use Gemini 2.5 pro to do some vibe coding for a rust (axum) back end for a web app. Biggest AI fail I’ve seen yet. Code is unusable; won’t even compile. It does insanely complicated things, implements wrong trait methods, somehow manages to create dependency hell, etc. Really really bad.

I can't tell if this is outrageously stupid or antisemitic. Faces of people in the pic imply it's probably both?

You guys do yourself a favor and look at what Eric Adams wore to Rosh Hashanah services at the Sephardic Lebanese Congregation
Eric Adams surrounded by members of the Sephardic Lebanese Congregation. He is wearing a blue velvet jacket that is embroidered with gold Magen David’s and other Jewish seeming patterns, including multiple menorahs. Everyone else is just in button down shirts or normal suits. He is not blending in.

If you pronounce Likert correctly (lick-urt) people will often think you don't know what you are talking about because the incorrect pronunciation (lie-kurt) is so common. Are there other good examples of this kind of thing?

Apparently AAAI reviews are in (for phase one at least) and it’s a complete shit show. I honestly don’t see an obvious path forward for venues that are receiving nearly 30 THOUSAND submissions. It’s pretty much a casino at this point (and not even close to a fair casino).
