This is it. I didn’t find it at all difficult to leave Twitter in the end: it stopped being fun and became boring and depressing. Whenever I opened it I’d see things that were obnoxious or upsetting. It was a relief not to do that.

This is an exact encapsulation of why I moved to Bluesky.

No amount of handwringing in the Atlantic about how I owe some eternal Promethean suffering to the discourse is going to make me stay on a site I hate, that stopped doing anything for me professionally years ago.

Well – no. Bluesky may or may not be, as one centre-right friend who felt unwelcome put it, “self-righteous island”. But the idea that’s why we went is nonsense. That I’ve largely stopped posting on a site that’s done more to shape my career and social circle than the rest of the internet combined is less about avoiding rival opinions (I love arguing with people who are wrong!) than with the fact the site simply became unusable. It stopped generating the things (good jokes, interesting debate, clicks) I wanted; it became extremely good at generating the things (racists, pornbots, racist pornbots) I did not.

Fun fact about the Salvation Army: they use a form of substance use treatment called work therapy. Oh, and by treatment, I mean they have people who have been convicted of drug charges work for their stores & warehouses in exchange for room, board, around a $1 a week, and minimal actual therapy.

I live for Drag Race moments like that. It's peak surreal camp. I seriously could not stop laughing and had to walk out of the room with the paused screen. It's as good as the H&M moment, if not more preposterous. Please, never let this show wane in fantastical absurdity.

It'd be like if a Drag Race contestant walked the runway dressed as Clancy and had to explain Twenty One Pilots lore to RuPaul, and describe the biggest character in rock music in almost 20 years, but Ru doesn't care because you can't name every character Jo Anne Worley ever played. LOVE IT.

For nearly two decades Ru and Michelle have basically declared DEATH and immediately sent home Drag Race contestants for not knowing obscure old Hollywood and 60s variety and game show references, but they're stopped dead in their tracks over one of the most recognizable characters in modern media.

I had to pause the TV and laugh so hard I was brought to tears and lost my voice at one of the #DragRaceUK contestants having to explain the lore and concept of FNAF to RuPaul and Michelle Visage. I haven't laughed that hard at a Drag Race moment in YEARS.
