I strongly recommend reading Howard Zinn's the people history of America where he dedicated a portion of the book on that subject. There was a strong resentment from conservatives at the time to fight the nazis whose values they shared

And you better believe that pro segregationist americans were pretty hesitant to fight the germans. They didn't have issues fighting the japanese though for obvious reasons

don't get me started on how congress wanted to limit (even deport) jews literally escaping for their lives arriving at their shores in drove. US society was still antisemitic even in 1940. After pearl Harbor, the US government made a huge propaganda campaign to unite "both side" of the issue

Don't get me wrong, there were LOT of anti nazi sentiment but If you look at the US before pearl Harbor, there were plenty of german-US good will events, an "america first" movement that wanted the US not get involved in the war, strong anti communist parties that denounced stalin over hitler, etc

I guess liberals need a reminder that the only reason why the US went to war in WW2 wasn't because everyone agreed Hitler had to be stopped nor that they saw democracy was in trouble but because Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and right after, Hitler declared war on the US out of the tripartite pact
