Sharing firsthand accounts is vital right now
As a federal appeals court has cleared the way for Trump to send National Guard troops here, I wrote this essay about the splitting of Portland into two separate identies: Real Portland, and its doppelganger: Internet Portland.

There are two Portland, Oregons. I live in the real one.

Sorry, Gale. We need to save the world. Now if you’ll excuse me, Halsin and I are going over here.

Making fake images of things happening in the world right now for real is just so insane. Trading actual humanity and resistance for a smooth disneyfied consumer friendly fascimile. Just reducing reality into slop as it is happening

I would posit that the reason so many people are shocked by the image of the White House being demolished is because it shows that Trump views it 1) entirely as his property and 2) that he doesn't really expect anybody else to live there.
But instead they share hollow, meaningless slop completely disconnected from any humanity, because it drives engagement and inflates their ego.
It’s impactful because it’s real. It’s true. And it might inspire someone else to stand up.

Every ethical question aside, I’m concerned that he thinks this image is persuasive

A glossy, kitschy fake picture with melty-faced protesters holding DANCE CHANGE & raising a flag with 11 stripes, on a street that exists nowhere. There’s nothing human or real about this. How can it be persuasive??
They could be using their massive platforms to share this. This is a real person, in a real moment in what will be our future’s history. It was taken by a real photographer (Daniel Cole) who captured this one in a million shot.
These are journalists. With no concept of why it might be important to preserve trust in journalism, or even reality. They want to fantasize about fighting fascism in weird kitschy AI pictures while the rest of us are in the real world.
With respect, we need to be able to point to an objective reality so the world can see what’s happening. The feeling this image evokes might be great, but something so obviously fake makes us look like idiots, and can be used by the right to diminish the fact that millions of real people protested.
Thank you for inspiring others with your bravery and joy!

Thanks for standing up for our rights!

Totally valid if you don’t mind the AI images. I do think it’s going to be a big problem though as people have a harder & harder time distinguishing propaganda from reality. Most AI generators have a watermark, but it’s easy to remove.
People know that paintings are art. The problem with AI images is that people often don’t know if they’re real or not. That is a problem when we’re resisting fascism, which relies on the distortion of truth.

I like the sentiment of the picture, but it devalues the millions of people who protested.
Here are some actual photos of actual protesters taken by actual people in Detroit yesterday.
Please please please stop posting AI generated slop. It distorts the truth, pollutes the planet, and pollutes our minds.
