With respect, we need to be able to point to an objective reality so the world can see what’s happening. The feeling this image evokes might be great, but something so obviously fake makes us look like idiots, and can be used by the right to diminish the fact that millions of real people protested.

Totally valid if you don’t mind the AI images. I do think it’s going to be a big problem though as people have a harder & harder time distinguishing propaganda from reality. Most AI generators have a watermark, but it’s easy to remove.

People know that paintings are art. The problem with AI images is that people often don’t know if they’re real or not. That is a problem when we’re resisting fascism, which relies on the distortion of truth.

I like the sentiment of the picture, but it devalues the millions of people who protested.

I think maybe Sora is a prelude to a hybrid Internet - one where curious, creative people can still share art and ideas, and one where people who enjoy lots of videos of Spiderman beating up grandmas can finally participate.

Social media platforms were once all about having an original, authentic voice. A generation of YouTubers, activists, podcasters, influencers, and writers—voices that defined the cultural mood—initially made their following by being authentic. They reset the terms of play through social uprisings, from the Arab Spring to Black Lives Matter and #MeToo. They leaned on opinion, comedy, and sports analysis, often sharing mundane observations or hot takes, because self-presentation was the paramount form of expression.

Sora removes the need for that style of authenticity entirely. It suggests that there is no value in the original source code of social media: your voice. Sora is only interested in entertainment or deception.
