🌊 Let's talk about something: We don't need another startup building "the world's most accurate flood model." A thread 🧵

tl;dr 👉 Stop chasing marginal gains in flood depth accuracy and start building the smart, human-centered tools that actually save properties and lives.

With the right professionals to design that bridge.

Stop chasing marginal gains in flood depth accuracy and start building the smart, human-centered tools that actually save properties and lives.

What's your take on this?
niklasjordan.com
The gap isn't in our hazard models. It's in our action models.

Existing risk models have given us solid foundations. Now we need to build the intelligent, digital bridge between those technical assessments and the people whose homes are actually at risk.
niklasjordan.com
The uncomfortable truth: The flood risk management sector needs more user-centred design experts, user experience researchers and usability professionals. We need people who understand human behavior, decision-making under uncertainty and how to design tools that people actually use when it matters.
niklasjordan.com
We need models that bridge the gap between "your area has a 1% annual flood probability" and "install these three specific measures in this order, here's what they'll cost, and here's how much damage they'll prevent."
niklasjordan.com
✔️ Analyse building characteristics against flood scenarios to recommend improvements
✔️ Dynamic decision-support: "Do this now, do this when you see the weather warning, do this during the flood"
✔️ Automated cost-benefit calculators that factor in construction costs, insurance implications, and value
niklasjordan.com
What we desperately need:

Innovation in the connection layer—and yes, this absolutely calls for new models and tools:

✔️ AI-powered translation layers that turn technical flood data into property-specific action plans
niklasjordan.com
Research backs this up: Literature strongly supports a shift toward making existing models more actionable through improved communication, stakeholder engagement, and integration of behavioural and social factors. We have the technical capability—what we're missing is the human connection.

Adding another decimal point to flood depth predictions doesn't help a homeowner in Aarhus understand that they need to install backflow valves in their basement. It doesn't tell a family in Hamburg when to move their valuables upstairs or how to protect their heating system.

3/ I've seen countless property owners living in high-risk zones who
🤷 Have no idea they're at risk
🗺️ Don't understand what their flood maps actually mean
🧱 Have no clue what practical steps to take
🏚️ Don't know which home improvements would actually protect them

👀 We're solving the wrong problem.

2/ Europe already has comprehensive flood risk maps. Every EU member state has dedicated flood risk management plans. Are they perfect? No. Are they good enough to identify who's at risk? Absolutely.

👉 The real problem isn't model precision—it's the last mile.

That's wonderful! But you forgot Denmark in the country selection 😢🇩🇰 Could you add it as you did for the other Scandinavian countries?

Nice example for the importance of #Accessibility in #RiskCommunication. Wondering if there are more? Is there something for #FloodRisks as well?

If you feel earthquake shaking or receive an earthquake alert you should drop down to the ground, take cover under a sturdy object, and hold on until all the shaking has stopped. www.shakeout.org/california/d...

Google Earth has updated imagery of Ukraine's Mariupol - which has been under Russian occupation since May 2022.

This is the Drama Theatre, bombed by Russia in March 2022, where hundreds died. All evidence of the strike has since been wiped away. Location: 47.0960, 37.54871

Nice visualisation of potential #FloodRisks due to heavy rain...

Heavy rain is coming for some parts of the UK over the next few days 🌧️

Rain warnings have been issued for this weekend, so be sure to stay #WeatherAware ⚠️

Funnily enough this morning's #NCKF talk @dmidk.bsky.social was also on this topic, though on the difference in persistent warming to different climate forcers: specifically methane and nitrous oxide Vs. CO2. Great work by Joe Nielsen who wrote a nice piece on it in Danish on Weekend Avisen.
hausfath.bsky.social
I'm not sure many folks realize just how persistent the warming from CO2 is.

Here is a set of 1000-year climate model runs (using FaIR) simulating one year of CO2 emissions (40 gigatons in 2020); a millennia later the world has not cooled back down!

You voted for him, America.
And from the lack of outrage, it looks like you want to keep him. 🤷‍♂️
