It was a pleasure to contribute to this article, which talks about how AI contributes to seismology - indeed, we have seen tremendous progress in the use of machine learning to detect small events.

“Like putting on glasses for the first time”—how AI improves earthquake detection
AI is “comically good” at detecting small earthquakes—here’s why that matters.

this was the most important thing I learned during my CS degree and now the most frustrating thing to see as I watch my peers (other grad students) and younger computer scientists replace critical thinking with AI

Coding isn't just the act of typing code, but the learned experience of problem solving. IMO educators need to maintain that coding is learning how to enrich your portfolio of transferable skills. GenAI will only ever be a mid tier shortcut provider to people that already know what they're doing.

The Trump regime has ordered nine top universities to agree to its demands or lose access to federal funds.

Reminder for any school dealing with Trump's extortion: You can't appease a tyrant.

Jane Goodall was an inspiration to all young female scientists, I hope she rests in peace

The great Dr Jane Goodall, ethologist and campaigner for great apes and much else, has died at the age of 91.

She loved this _Far Side_ cartoon, and wrote a forward for a later Gary Larson collection.

In general I think it's hard to combat scientific misinformation when some of the best research is locked behind an academic paywall, while lots of nonsense gets published free for everyone to read in predatory journals.

Please share with anyone who cares about NSF support for graduate students and take 30 seconds to sign and leave a comment.

The deadline for the 2025 Graduate Research Fellowship Program is about one month away and literally no one can apply. #NSFGRFP

It’s just so great that the GRFP rules have been updated. Decided not to apply in my first year of grad school so I could apply this year, I guess now I’ll never be eligible 🙃

Northwestern Venezuela was struck by several large earthquakes today and yesterday (M6.2, 5.8, 6.3). Why did these shallow thrust events occur in an area where previously only strike-slip earthquakes have been documented? We speculate about the geology in our latest post.

⚒️ 🧪 Another big addition to the remarkable M8.8 earthquake sequence offshore Kamchatka: a M7.8 - the biggest aftershock so far.

With foreshocks, aftershocks, aftershocks of foreshocks, and foreshocks of aftershocks, it's hard to keep these earthquakes straight! Read more about what's going on:

this weekend, I joined others from UO and the Cascades Volcano Observatory to deploy seismometers on Mt. St. Helens to monitor debris flows on the volcano

me & my refried beans enjoyed the view of Mt. Rainier from Mt. St. Helens this weekend

The situation in Afghanistan is dire following the M6 earthquake on August 31st. More than 2,200 people have died; reports indicate that 65% of buildings in the region were destroyed.

Meanwhile, satellite imaging has begun to reveal both devastation and scientific details about the quake.

If listing cases of 2025 US political violence, one would include the Charlie Kirk killing, the Melissa Horman killing (MN state legislator), and the CDC shooting.
The president omitting Horman and CDC, but reaching back 8 years for a non-deadly shooting to cite, conveys approval of those shootings.

Call out the hypocrisy.

Trump is ordering flags at half staff for Kirk's murder.

Yet, two months after the murder of MN Speaker Melissa Hortman he's refused to so much as call the Hortman family or Gov Walz, & instead mocked them.

Vile hypocrisy doesn't facilitate peace, it enables more violence.
