This month in 1909 -

Lady Wrestler Violet Stanley, who had recently performed at the Agricultural Hall, Islington was imprisoned for three months for keeping a brothel. She was later done for sex work as Emily Baillie, and in 1911 for using counterfeit coins in Newcastle as Rose Daley.

LADY WRESTLER SENT TO PRISON At the Clerkenwell Police-court on Saturday afternoon, Bertram Young, 26, described as a salesman, and Violet Stanley, 22, a “lady wrestler,” were charged with assisting in the management of a brothel at Caledonian-road, between the 11th and 17th September. Mr Bramall prosecuted for the Islington Borough Council, and Mr. Harry Ricketts appeared for the defence. Sub-divisional Inspector Rogers, G division, executed the warrant, after the usual police observation, and in the coarse of the case it was stated that both the prisoners had travelled the country as wrestlers - the lady having given an exhibition side show in the Agricultural hall. The couple had cohabited together. When the police raided the premises in Caledonian-road a loaded revolver, ready cocked, and two "life preservers” were found there.

yeah, the celebs train with him at Playfight for it now. He was in the tag gauntlet, teaming with Big Damo - I think the last time he did it, it was as "Mr. Dawkins", Ivo Graham's public school wrestling coach. They usually do a good job of pairing comedians with pros.

it's genuinely a good laugh; weird seeing it go from niche Edinburgh thing to the Apollo, but it was a fun show. Ed Gamble has better natural heel instincts than half the current scene.

they could play a 24 hour marathon of Drag Race UK, and still the campest thing on the BBC this week would be Alan Carr mourning Paloma Faith after she's been shut in a coffin by Claudia Winkleman, all soundtracked by Paloma Faith's own INXS cover version.

I like how Celebrity Traitors introduces two new wrinkles to the premise, through having traitors not motivated by personal gain, and the different dynamic of the players mostly already knowing each other.

But mostly I like how filling the show with luvvies highlights how relentlessly camp it is.

History isn’t just about who was in power, it is also about who were the people. If our focus is solely on who was at the top and what was happening in the palaces, stately homes and Houses of Parliament, we miss the stories of everyone else. And ‘everyone else’ was the majority of the population.

Another case where "everyone is twelve" is hugely instructive - I've been saying since Gamergate that the loudest, most obnoxious voices are always just spoiled little boys throwing a tantrum because they've just found out they're expected to share their toys. And that some toys aren't theirs.

This highlights how much of reactionary right-wing thought is just entitlement; years ago, a friend's company put out some anti-Trump merch, and people were attacking them and calling them stupid for "alienating half their audience". What makes you think *you* were ever our audience?

That's not true. When I lived in that house there were always about five male mandarin ducks competing for one female.

These - and the mergansers at the same place - muscled their way into my novel Villager, which I wrote most of while renting this house.

I hate framing education as customer service, or as a product to be bought. I would prefer if that weren't the case. I would prefer a serious, spirited defence of the kind of subjects that are relentlessly under attack. But in practical, real terms - it's students' own money, fuck off.
