The Alberta President of the Canadian Bar Association has entered the chat…

Calling out not only the preemptive use of the notwithstanding clause but also the limited debate as threats to the rule of law.

Ooooo!

Danielle Smith just issued a new set of rules for staff accepting gifts!

(Even though there’s questions about the last rules being followed)

And it has…

A notwithstanding clause!

Because UCP!

The more shocking thing...at least it should be, is that it's only creating a conflict of interest. Most of these documents have "the appearance of a conflict of interest".

The Alberta Funds Public School petition signature collection has started in Medicine Hat. My wife is one of the certified canvassers. Currently, we're going door to door. As time goes on, we'll be doing pop-ups. Let's get it over the top AB.

NEW: ICE is planning to build a shadow deportation network in Texas. A proposal outlines a 24/7 transport operation run by armed contractors—turning Texas into the logistical backbone of an industrialized deportation machine.

Fact check: EVs are still the future, no matter what the Trump administration tries to do to forestall it.

The question for Canada now is whether we want to participate in that future or get stuck in the past.

Yes, EVs are still the future
Why we need to ignore the naysayers and actually look at the data

I will be so sad/angry if the Canadian taxpayer ends up footing the bill for this.
Especially since there is a non-zero chance the damn thing won't work at all.

And the middle finger to the "polluter pays" principal.

Look we’re not saying that we just posted the most timely panel episode we’ve ever produced for our patreon supporters…

But…

We totes just did.

For everyone else, look for it in two parts starting at 8 PM on Sunday!

Hey #YYC!

Looking for a way to let Demetrios and the UCP know how you feel about them revoking teachers charter rights?

Thursday, students are gathering at his office to send a message!

Let them know they aren’t alone!

Smith is utilizing school boards to send out this letter to parents…

But missing from it in all of the spin is the fact that she REVOKED teachers charter rights.

Almost as if she knows that what she did was an overreach and parents would be appalled.

The hypocrisy of Premier Smith's current Chief of Staff, Rob Anderson:

The government is acting like a "dictator" by ripping away legal rights to impose a settlement.

"That's wrong. That's not the Alberta way. That's not what we do here."

I'm goign to be radical here and suggest people listen to scientists instead of billionaires when it comes to what we should do about the ever-worsening climate crisis.

What the Alberta government just did should worry all Canadians.

When they legislated striking teachers back to work, they went a step further:

They used the notwithstanding clause.

This is part of a worrying trend.

@emmettmacfarlane.com helped me break it down:

@readtheorchard.org's Kennyism book is great and helps to explain both Kenney and the UCP.

What is a book you read that was foundational to your understanding of politics, power and the way the world works?

Would love some recommendations!

Anytime anyone claims that Smith used the Notwithstanding clause in a way that Peter Lougheed would have approved of…

Feel free to share this from his 1998 paper that makes it clear that absolutely isn’t the case.

Let’s this sink in. Bill 2 overrides:

• The Labour Relations Code;
• The Public Education Collective Bargaining Act;
• The Alberta Bill of Rights;
• The Alberta Human Rights Act;
• The Education Act.

All without vigorous debate or consultation with Albertans.

Braid: An appalling, unjust law drives Alberta teachers back to work
Alberta teachers are going back to work, but the law that drives them lingers as a dangerous attack on rights, writes columnist Don Braid.

Well, as I go back to work today, what can I say that won't land me in hot water? I know...

I'm going to channel my anger at the UCP toward the hopefully to-be-successful Demetrios Nicolaides recall petition. May the odds forever be in the residents' favour.
