I like how they gave the Nobel Prize to someone fighting for democracy in Venezuela, instead of someone sinking fishing boats off their coast.

A few months ago, a friend visited me in Utrecht. As we biked around to do daily errands, she kept saying, "This is like a dream. This is like a dream."

I do believe all cities the world over to soon come to their senses, limit car movement, and build a dream of safe, abundant streets for people.

Excellent photograph... It is something you have to do if you are in the area....well worth the effort ☀️👋

I took the road until it ran out, rashly ignored the carefully positioned bike stands and pushed the bike up the rest of the way. But as you say, I was at least rewarded with a view ... though as the pic below shows, it was a close run thing!

Thank you Paul....but I was going to say, how could you cycle up there? ... At least you got a view ... All I had was mist and fog, couldn't see a thing! .. 😁.. ☀️👋

Beautiful, but a bugger to get your bike up those steps!

I think I'd cycle 80 miles in a headwind to see Ely Cathedral. No other cathedral feels so organically grown from the earth itself - it's lantern tower is one of the most verdant wonders of the medieval world. #thread
Ely Cathedral’s octagon and spires rise above the town’s tiled rooftops, their weathered stone and intricate pinnacles catching morning light beneath a pale blue Fenland sky.

Some good news.

London is meeting legal limits for toxic NO2 pollution for the first time – almost 200 years earlier than predicted – following the Mayor’s "world leading air pollution policies," City Hall announces.

The Ultra Low Emissions Zone - and similar policies - really do work.

Oh boy - Headline grabber
Would be nice to get more detail. That dot map of high weald so misleading. I strongly suspect many of those apps/competitions are eg conversions and other planning classes with no loss of land 1/n

Is there a reason I ask that the Times are using a picture of asylum seekers in a boat to describe rules for migrants who came on legal routes such as skilled worker visas for doctors?
thetimes.com
Tough new conditions to be imposed on migrants who want to settle in the UK will not apply to more than a million people who arrived in the UK under the post-Brexit immigration surge
Labour’s tough new rules will not apply to migrants already in UK

Sadiq Khan meanwhile is an intensely popular three-times elected mayor of a city that is still majority white and previously voted for Boris Fucking Johnson. It’s clearly not some far out left-wing Islamic theocracy (if such a thing even exists).

I've had enough of listening. Time for action on low traffic.

My letter in the Oxford Times today
Your correspondent says 'we should listen' when it comes to Oxford's perennial transport issues.

I've been listening.

I've listened to people say that children's safety doesn't matter, because drivers can't be expected to slow down.

I've listened to people say that bus passengers don't matter, because drivers have more money.

I've listened to people say that traffic jams don't matter, because cities will always be congested.

I've listened to people say that collisions don't matter, because 'accidents will happen'.

I've listened to people say that vehicle emissions don't matter, because climate science isn't real.

And I've listened to people say that we mustn't reduce traffic, because that might inconvenience drivers.

I've listened, and I'm still waiting to hear a single effective alternative to low traffic.
