President Zelenskyy in Sweden today: Ukraine plans to buy 100-150 JAS-39 Gripen E fighters. Certainly a positive sign for the post-war prospects of the Ukrainian Air Force. Great EW suite, modern AESA radar, Meteor missile compatible.

But, it doesn't help win the current war.

Alternative financing method:
Denmark wants to buy additional 15 F35 from the USA. Lets scrap that and instead help fund Gripens for Ukraine.

If this comes through, then there are sooooo many things right with it:
1. It is the right plane for the war
2. It is the right number of planes (can always use more, but 100+ is the right ambition)
3. It the right version of the plane, the E version, the newest

Does this mean that:
A: the US will approve this sale? The current Griphen engine is build on a US license
or B: The Swedes have found a new engine, and Ukraine is actually buying new Griphen E/Fs?

With the current engine being used in the Griphen, they would also need approval from the US before such as sale can be concluded.

One can hope the Swedes have been working on integrating a new Rolls Royes engine into it.

I'm pretty sure no European country would be willing to either shoot down or force Putin's plane to land. As you say, tantamount to a declaration of war, something European states have been unwilling to consider under any circumstances.

Journalists ought to be reporting more on the accident (tbc) aboard the shadow fleet tanker Falcon. How it demonstrates the increased risks of these aging and uninsured ships. This could as easily have happened in Baltic or North Sea. And who would have covered the environmental clean up?
