Upzoning plus the large lots of uptown Oakland worked amazingly. Highlights both the promise of zoning reform from efforts like SB79, and also the need to make apartment construction on smaller lots easier (single stair reform) if we want to replicate this success.

Every so often I look up the rents for the Nook on Valdez, a micro-unit project in downtown Oakland built about 10 years ago. They are currently renting units affordable to people at 45% of AMI. This is a market-rate project that pays property taxes.

that's true, except the city is genuinely in a budget crisis. I think what he wants to cut will be telling

I’m overhearing a celebration in the street. Must be about SB 79 being signed. At least it is for me.

yeah, unfortunately she's proven that alright. I'm intrigued to see how he campaigns, and it'll definitely be interesting to see if he can get any union support

at LAUSD, he piloted a free Metro program for all students, led an initiative to build affordable housing for teachers, and started an arts fund for students. are people assuming he's to the right because of his banking background?

LAT has a little bit on Beutner's views on SB 79, in which he says he'd like to have tinkered around with the language more. This has a pretty good rundown of Beutner's career and political history, as well as the political landscape as he enters the race.

"'I just wish that we had leadership in Los Angeles that had been ahead of this, so we would have had a greater say in some of the rules,' he said. 'But conceptually, yes, we’ve got to build more housing.'"

I mean, he's not wrong

In an absolutely shocking revelation, it turns out that when Elon was yelling about leaving California — inducing a million headlines about California’s demise — he was actually lying.
Elon Musk loves to hate CA, yet can’t stop leasing new offices
The tech mogul’s companies haven’t been leaving the Bay Area, but rather, have been expanding their office footprint at every turn.

This LAist piece has a bunch more insights from what appears to have been an interview with Beutner earlier this week. His remarks put a spotlight on many of the criticisms that have come up over Mayor Bass's leadership and decisions.

This is wild. ICYMI, SB 79 was not the only pro-housing bill
@governor.ca.gov signed. He signed over 40 bills that tackle speeding up construction, expanding affordability, strengthening accountability and more. I couldn't even fit it in one screenshot!
The image is a list of bills signed by the California Assembly. The bills primarily focus on various aspects of housing and development, including streamlining permits, increasing affordability, and addressing homelessness.
The list includes bills from several Assemblymembers, such as Esmerelda Soria, Christopher Ward, and Buffy Wicks.
The bills cover a range of topics, including housing elements, residential building permits, and zoning.
One of the bills, AB 480, addresses personal income tax and low-income housing tax credits.
Another bill, AB 678, establishes an Interagency Council on Homelessness.

I don't want another term with Bass, but if it ends up that way, I'd expect Mejia might run in 2030 when they both term out
pettyyeti.bsky.social
he already announced he's running for another term as controller
