Don't know about you but I remember a time, not so long ago, when going out in public to claim that Greta Thunberg is the antichrist was a way to get access to psychiatric help.

The first article of the Silicon Valley special issue I’m editing is out! @mrshoward.bsky.social shows how contrarianism isn’t genuine dissent but a performative strategy rooted in venture capital. The piece develops negative mimesis, how dissent is aestheticized, repackaged & stripped of politics.

This is not opposition to the far right or fascism. It is not even a defence of "EU values". It is an exercise of cosying up to authoritarianism in the hope that co-existence can guarantee their priorities and remaining in power. It is a joke and we are paying its dreadful price. End/
proufos.bsky.social
Ranting about so-called EU values (rule of law, international law or press freedom) has never appeared more hypocritical, when it is more than clear that their concerns are *exclusively* driven by fears about any potential diversion from the militarisation drive against Russia. 4/

Liberal ‘opposition’ to the far right in Europe is not just *indifferent* but complicit to the cementing of austerity policies, the dehumanisation & persecution of migrants. It turns a blind eye when figures like Macron make a mockery out of formal democratic procedures. 3/ bsky.app/profile/prou...

Remarkably, in the liberal scaremongering 'far right in Brussels' list, Meloni is nowhere to be seen. Mitsotakis’ & his far right cabinet can continue taking the piss out of EU institutions and rule of law/press freedom violations. Fascist perspectives get rebranded as ‘legitimate concerns’. 2/

We are truly between a rock and a hard place. While the far right keeps getting normalised and rising, the liberal mainstream in Europe only sees a problem with Orbán, Fico, Babiš, a potential Le Pen or AfD victory because of their attitude towards Russia. *Nothing else*. 1/

Half of the things in Trump's new 'presidential action' describe what his administration and his MAGA people are actually doing.

Something I hinged on to get to this what I describe: the Marxian fetishisation of artefacts is so complete in the case of AI that not only do we somehow conclude machines think, but we accept for them to think, speak, draw instead of us, while also thinking these are (expressions of) our thoughts.

I am starting to think that the inability/unwillingness of many to accept the characterization "fascist" for contemporary fascists stems, in part, from the fact that their understanding of historical fascism is mediated by its defeat and not by its moment of ascendance.

A friend in Chicago, top of her law school class, has two US-born children. She can't leave her kids at the school yard before or after school starts even if a teacher is there. ICE is grabbing "latino looking kids" from school playgrounds, and her kids don't look white *enough* for her to feel safe

Jesus. You think it can’t get any worse, then you read these stories. US citizens and legal residents illegally arrested and held for days. **Native Americans** getting detained and held for days because ICE agents are too stupid/racist to know about tribal IDs.
