starting a 🧵 of hospital and clinic closures due to Medicaid cuts in the MAGA murder bill:

an administration ruling Congress with an “iron fist” would be able to pass a budget. Johnson is keeping the House in recess because things are going to go completely off the rails once Grijalva gets sworn in, and he knows it

“.. Inside the White House, top advisers joke that they are ruling Congress with an “iron fist,” according to people who have heard the comments. Steve Bannon, the influential Trump ally, likened Congress to the Duma, the Russian assembly that is largely ceremonial.”

every part of this story is infuriating, but especially the part where the city argues that a man actively experiencing a stroke didn’t clearly explain he was having one and therefore the cops who arrested him aren’t responsible for his death in custody www.mprnews.org/story/2025/1...

I'm not sure how to amicably coexist in a country where half of my neighbors are this guy and the other half voted for this raid to happen
reichlinmelnick.bsky.social
My first thought was “wow I hope this guy didn’t give out his name because he could absolutely be charged” and yup, he is correct to stay anonymous.

This man’s account is shocking. His neighbors’ situation is shocking. The entire Chicago raid is shocking.
On the other side was a mom and her 7-year-old daughter, pleading for his help.
"I wasn't planning on letting her stay, but I didn't know what the hell was going on," the man said of his Venezuelan migrant neighbors. But he quickly relented. The little girl was inconsolable and hid under his bed.
"I didn't want them to take her," said the man, who didn't want to be named because he fears he'll be targeted by federal authorities for his actions.
"I gave her my bedroom, and I just told her,
'Just stay there. Don't open, don't, shh, just stay quiet," he recalled telling the mom and daughter as he choked back tears.

The Virginia Senate just told UVA it’s not getting state funding if it accepts the compact since UVA exists to serve Virginia, its residents, & their interests—not be a tool of the federal govt. Speaker Johnson just declared the House will remain in recess all next week. This will mark a full month off; the chamber has not been in session since September 19.

House GOP just said they won't be back in Washington next week, so the shutdown probably goes at least until the week of Oct 20th.

Ladies and gentlemen, we did it. SB 79 has been signed.
prowhaledad.bsky.social
it is extremely on-brand for this administration to try to execute RIFs they could have performed at any time between January and now during a period where they are legally prohibited from doing so. it is also typical of Vought to act like he has the authority to order gv’t-wide RIFs when he doesn’t
prowhaledad.bsky.social
obviously the administration won’t prosecute itself, but Democratic politicians should make clear that there is no statute of limitations for violations the Antideficiency Act, which carries criminal penalties
prowhaledad.bsky.social
since Russ Vought has declared government layoffs are underway, here’s @repwalkinshaw.bsky.social making it clear that the administration is prohibited by the Antideficiency Act from conducting RIFs during a shutdown: www.nextgov.com/people/2025/...

If I were a DC reporter, I’d consider maybe pressing Johnson on how he reconciles these two statements.
@atrupar.com

Mike Johnson: "We're so angry about it. I mean, l'm a very patient guy, but l've had it with these people. The theory we have right now -- they have a hate America rally that's scheduled for October 18 on the National Mall. It's the pro-Hamas wing and antifa people ..." @atrupar.com

Mike Johnson: "People have got to stop framing simple policy disagreements in terms of existential threats to our democracy. You can't call the other side fascists and enemies of the state and not understand that there are some deranged people in our society who will take that as cues to act."
prowhaledad.bsky.social
you would never know from the way these shitheads talk that they are describing 75 million Americans
prowhaledad.bsky.social
they’re just taking their cues from Johnson, who earlier this morning went on Fox News to call the October 18th protests a “hate America” rally that is “pro-Hamas”

Speaker Mike Johnson, standing next to Emmer here, urged Democrats less than a month ago to "turn down their rhetoric," saying, "Nazis and fascists is not helpful."

As such, striking to see him stand quietly as a fellow Republican insists there is a "terrorist wing" of the Democratic Party.

Emmer: "This is about one thing and one thing alone -- to score political points with the terrorist wing of their party, which is set to hold a hate America rally in DC next week."
