🚨New on Phonautograph🚨

The follow-up to the first Four Way Hips album. This one's not recorded to a four-track, though.

Electronic with some Brazilian twists and big beats. I think it's a fun record.

If you like Cluster's Zuckerzeit this may be up your alley:

Christ, I must have practised about eight hours today. Once you go down the transcribing rabbit hole it's hard to get out if there's nothing to pull you out.

I never get these things right. They're not as crispy as I would like. My technique is lacking. Still, they were fine.

Look at the lineup on this! Hank Jones, Elvin Jones, Bob Brookmeyer, Milt Hinton, Paul Chambers. Heavy cats. Tom Dowd engineered. If you don't know this album go check it out.

@noragermain.bsky.social, you must be familiar with this Lookofsky album. I'd love to hear your opinion on it.

Harry (an orchestra player) and Hank Jones wrote the solos before-hand so Harry played written parts. What's incredible is how he nails the phrasing. You never hear a classical player on any instrument phrase that way. And the solos are incredible. This page has a copy of his Round Midnight solo.

Had some money kicking around my PayPal so I blew it on this Harry Lookofsky album which was half priced for liquidation. One of the great jazz violin records despite the fact that he doesn't improvise on it. An early feat of overdubbing in 1960. I also grabbed this Wagner Tiso album.

I was hanging out with my friend Christian last night and he gave me a copy of his Element Kuuda tape on @hothamsound.bsky.social. So happy to have this.

Wow, amazing! Who was in that incarnation of the Messengers?
purelava.bsky.social
That's a relief to hear!

I thought it would change the responsiveness since there's a bit of a delay between when you hit the octave key and when the arm hits the whatever that thing is called that on the neck.

Oh, that's a great idea. I'm gonna poke around the house and see if I have anything. I've just got some electrical tape on there for the time being. The cork that had been there was ancient, I'm surprised it lasted that long. Also surprised they didn't replace when I had my horn overhauled.

Preeeeetty sure that used to have cork on it!

I got lucky with Cool Struttin', it was in the used CD bin!

Ah, that's too bad. I'm in Montreal. The record stores are pretty good and the thrifting can be excellent.

The work continues on Jackie McLean's Capuchin Swing. Finally working on tonguing and arpeggio fingerings. Getting my guitar fingers to be sax fingers.

Some sources say the 10th, others 11th, so let’s just celebrate the magnificent Fred Hopkins, who was born around this time of October in 1947, all weekend. Play some Air! Or any of the many other recordings he made such significant and memorable contributions to. (📸Tom Copi).
