This is a great thread
I tell you what, though: I've come to have a very basic problem with the formulation "if liberal government doesn't do XYZ, fascism rises." This to me reflects one of the deepest & most enduring blind spots among the broad left coalition, namely ... they don't believe in the right.

Lemme explain.

The unspoken root assumption that underlies this theme is that fascism -- reactionary tribalism, a desire to draw in the circle of moral concern, to heighten in-group out-group distinctions -- is a kind of pathology, a break from the normal, something that's gone wrong w/ an otherwise decent person.

One feature you see in virtually every left analysis of politics, whether center-left or far-left, is that the right's authoritarianism, thirst for violence, and nihilism are framed as reactions to the left's failures. "They wanted better healthcare, they didn't get it, so they went fascist."

There is both hope and horror in this but I will take the hope.

Well, we’re going to sit here while you smoke this whole pack of baseball and THEN we’ll see how you feel.

People write "the Democratic Party" when what they mean is "my daughter's friend group at Oberlin."
It continues to be a problem that none of us can agree on any of this. Everyone’s impression is so wildly different that we can’t define the problem.
what the hell are you talking about man, biden's entire presidency was about the middle class. it was the entire political theory behind deliverism and the economy

Funny discovery: in #10ThingsIHateAboutYou during the scenes where the nerds try to hire Patrick Verona to seduce Kat, they visit the metal shop. At first glance it looks like Patrick is welding or something but no. He’s actually doing stained glass.

For Tolkien fans, a timely passage for No Kings Eve, from WH Auden’s review of Lord of the Rings.

The entire "free speech on campus" moral panic was manufactured to blackmail us into making space in intellectual life for bigots and charlatans who couldn't get there on their own merits. Its a DEI scheme for fascism. Congratulations to everyone who took it at face value.
“Following his lecture, Yarvin will debate the legendary British historian David Starkey on history and the future of conservatism.” Everything about this is so cursed. Masks off at the University of Oxford.
The cast, music, design, effects, costumes, and cinematography were all great. The ONLY problem with those movies was the scripts.

I always read on my kindle while rocking the baby and the only book that ever completely ruined bedtime was Three Men In A Boat. I was wheezing hysterically about the cheeses for half an hour and no one went to bed
The absolute best thing about the internet is the fact that we can say “obviously need need to revisit immediately” and actually get it immediately (and for free!) and be delighted. I’m going to read this while rocking my kid to bed and I’m going to have such a nice time
I actually force myself to manually dial important numbers so I don’t forget them

Basically all manufacturers and retailers should be obligated to either collect their waste and broken products, or pay for others to deal with them.

You’d see an amazing display of innovation in efficient, repairable and recyclable products and packaging.
I still wish we could set up a system where package delivery came with up “pickup empties” option, like milk deliveries use to have.

You bring me a new box, I give you some empty boxes!
