BTW for those who don’t know me yet, below is a TL;DR of my political beliefs. Am an anarcho-Social Democrat :D.

Rawls, Sen and Nussbaum fill out most of the details. The Veil of Ignorance (extended to include ignorance about the _species_ one is born into) and Capability Approach especially.
I consider myself a lefty even by Nordic standards and have been called a communist often enough by the far right loons. Because I do maintain that billionaires are system errors and we need to redistribute resources fairly if we want to have a future worth having.

Every year around Thanksgiving, I see tons of grad students post heartbreaking messages on social media about how their loved ones don’t understand or support their decision to study what seems like something pointless or silly.

Perhaps my American Scientist essay can help!

“Why Are We Funding This?”
Long-standing myths about “silly science” have contributed to the reckless slashing of government-supported research.

Nothing to worry about, just a US official advising our nuclear-armed adversary how to manipulate the President of the United States, a notoriously weak-minded mark
This is really wild stuff tbh

You get the feeling that Ukrainian, French or Chinese intelligence analysts may have gotten wind of the details of the Russia-US 28 point plan for peace in our time before Marco Rubio

Someone (Rubio?) is MEGA pissed at the Ukraine peace plan situation if they leaked a full on *recording* of this Witkoff call (with transcript, lol).

Seriously, what are we doing, America? We’re helping Russia destroy a democratic country it illegally invaded, one amateur phone call at a time.

@bcmerchant.bsky.social's recent book Blood in the Machine was an engaging history of the Luddite movement, fighting to distribute the benefits of industrialization more widely rather than concentrating them in the hands of capital owners.

Not the cease fire.
Israelin asevoimat on surmannut Gazassa tänään vähintään 17 palestiinalaista.

Max Planck Institute for Demographic Researc on julkaissut tutkimuksen, jonka mukaan Gazassa on sodan aikana saanut surmansa yli 100 000 palestiinalaista.
Israelin asevoimat on surmannut Gazassa tänään vähintään 4 palestiinalaista.

Israel sallii Gazaan keskimäärin 170 avustuskuormaa päivässä vaikka sitoutui tulitaukosopimuksessa rajoittamattomiin avustuskuljetuksiin. Yli 90% gazalaisista elää humanitaarisen avun varassa.

It doesn't matter how you think the Ukraine war should end. This is not normal. (also, a bit too soon to call Gaza ceasefire a 'triumph')

Let’s run through a few of them: first up, of course, is the smart speaker.

Do you really need an Alexa listening in on everything you do? Even more, is that something you want to foist on someone you love? I don’t think so!

At the end of the day, maybe your loved ones don’t need more tech at all and just need a gift that shows you’re thinking of them and want to spend time with them.

Or if you do want to give tech, consider some that locks them out of the worst apps on their phone.

There are many more bad tech products to avoid. But I keep coming back to @hypervisible.blacksky.app and David Golumbia’s concept of luxury surveillance.

We need to really think about the surveillance tech we’re adopting — and certainly that we’re pushing on others.
