I consider myself a lefty even by Nordic standards and have been called a communist often enough by the far right loons. Because I do maintain that billionaires are system errors and we need to redistribute resources fairly if we want to have a future worth having.

Every year around Thanksgiving, I see tons of grad students post heartbreaking messages on social media about how their loved ones don’t understand or support their decision to study what seems like something pointless or silly.

During his call with Ushakov, Witkoff told his Russian counterpart that he had deep respect for Putin and that he had told Trump that it was his belief that Russia has always wanted a peace deal. The US envoy mentioned Zelenskiy’s upcoming visit and suggested that Putin could speak to Trump ahead of that meeting. “Zelenskiy is coming to the White House on Friday,” Witkoff said. “I will go to that because they want me there, but I think if possible we have the call with your boss before that Friday meeting.”  Ushakov asked Witkoff whether it would be “useful” for Putin to call Trump. Witkoff said it would. He also recommended that Putin congratulate Trump for the Gaza peace deal, say that Russia had supported it and that he respects the president as a man of peace. “From that, it’s going to be a really good call,” Witkoff said. Steve Witkoff “Here’s what I think would be amazing,” Witkoff then added. “Maybe he says to President Trump: you know, Steve and Yuri discussed a very similar 20-point plan to peace and that could be something that we think might move the needle a little bit, we’re open to those sorts of things.” Ushakov appeared to take some of the advice on board. Putin “will congratulate” and will say “Mr Trump is a real peace man,” he said.

(Bloomberg) -- US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff, fresh from the triumph of the Gaza peace deal, held a phone call last month with a senior Kremlin official to suggest they work together on a similar plan for Ukraine — and that Vladimir Putin should raise it with Donald Trump. In an Oct. 14 phone call that lasted a little over five minutes, Witkoff advised Yuri Ushakov, Putin’s top foreign policy aide, on how the Russian leader should broach the issue with Trump. His guidance included suggestions on setting up a Trump-Putin call before Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s White House visit later that week and using the Gaza agreement as a way in. “We put a 20-point Trump plan together that was 20 points for peace and I’m thinking maybe we do the same thing with you,” Witkoff told Ushakov, according to a recording of the conversation reviewed and transcribed by Bloomberg. A White House spokesperson, Anna Kelly, acknowledged receipt of a request for comment and didn’t immediately respond. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov didn’t immediately respond to comment.

Let’s be clear about these products: you’re effectively sticking a microphone in the middle of your home that’s recording everything going on around it. Is that really something you’re comfortable with? Even more, is it something you’re comfortable foisting on someone you love? There’s been plenty of reporting over the years confirming this problem with supposedly “smart” speakers like Alexa and Google Home. Amazon used to have an option to “opt out” of having your recordings sent to the company, but it was removed earlier this year. On top of that, the speakers are simply not as convenient and useful as the companies promised they would be. Apple is the most notable example of this, as Siri has always been an underwhelming entry into the voice assistant market, but in truth, Alexa and Google Home have significant limitations of their own. Many people who get these devices end up using them for a bit, then they just sit around, vacuuming up all the sounds happening around them.

At the end of the day, maybe your loved ones don’t need more tech at all and just need a gift that shows you’re thinking of them and want to spend time with them.

Or if you do want to give tech, consider some that locks them out of the worst apps on their phone.

Maybe they don’t need new tech at all. Consider putting a bit of time into making them something sentimental, or if you don’t have the time for that, finding a homemade gift made by an artisan at a local shop in your community or even on Etsy. What about a nicely scented candle or a comfy blanket or some tasty cookies or chocolates to go along with a physical book you picked out just for them? You could grab them a subscription to a less mainstream streaming service like Criterion or Mubi, even pick them out a Blu-ray they might like, or offer to spend an afternoon with them that includes a trip to the bookstore or cinema. Not convinced and still want some kind of tech product? Alright then. Give them a gift to help them reclaim some of their time and concentration. You could grab them a small block made by Brick or Unpluq that will let them lock themselves out of social media and any other apps that are distracting them — maybe even from enjoying that book or movie you gave them.

There are many more bad tech products to avoid. But I keep coming back to @hypervisible.blacksky.app and David Golumbia’s concept of luxury surveillance.

We need to really think about the surveillance tech we’re adopting — and certainly that we’re pushing on others.

Ultimately, a lot of these products make me think of a concept called luxury surveillance coined by Chris Gilliard and the late David Golumbia a few years ago. They were arguing that there’s a line where forms of surveillance can feel oppressive to some — particularly poorer and marginalized groups in society — but that more privileged groups can feel are actually benefiting from them by making their lives easier or more convenient. Yet, Gilliard and Golumbia argue that line can easily shift, and while the surveillance may once have felt it was worth the trade off, it can quickly become an oppressive force for a much wider swath of people. “We need to develop a much deeper way of talking about surveillance technology and a much richer set of measures with which to regulate their use,” they wrote. “Just as much, we need to recognize that voluntarily adopting surveillance isn’t an isolated choice we make only for ourselves but one that impacts others in a variety of ways we may not recognize.” That’s something to consider in our everyday lives as much as when we’re choosing what to gift to others.

Sure but what I am maybe after is that for hard global power to exist there has to be a real risk when dealing with Europe that when you poke it enough they will move all that GDP power, literally remake the economy if needed, to make your life hard.
