A short article of mine on civil-military relations and democratic backsliding had been accepted for publication in the journal "Connections".

Then I received an email that the editors can't publish the paper unless I "remove the case study/examples of the United States" (1/x)

Well, here's Nobel Peace Prize winner Machado welcoming the Trump administration's illegal military strikes against her Venezuelan compatriots as "legitimate pressure"

Nothing says "academia's predominant manuscript submission system is completely unsuitable for its one and only task" like...

"It is recommended that all users of Scholar One work from their home computers and avoid working from computer systems at their places of work" (aka universities)

All users (reviewers and authors) should avoid working from Department of Defense or College/University related domains that often block “pop-up” messages. Scholar One will have frequent pop-up messages when filling out information in the system, or to prompt confirmation of submitted responses when submitting articles or reviews. If a reviewer or author cannot see or respond to such pop-up messages, then their submitted information, review, or article submission will not be submitted
Therefore, it is recommended that users of the Scholar One system work from their privately owned systems, normally from their homes, and avoid using institutional domains. If reviewers and authors are required to work from their institutions or work places, then it is recommended that they contact their institution’s Information Technology (IT) department to enable pop-ups from Scholar One to be accepted by their system domains.

Why are Latin American politicians drawing the armed forces into pol-itics and public security? What consequences does this democraticallycontrolled re-militarisation have for civil–military relations? With a casestudy of Brazil, this article introduces the conceptual tool of ‘negative con-vergence’: a widespread acceptance of increasing the military’s internalroles among political leaders, military elites and society. Drawing uponpublic opinion surveys, the article analyses the ‘demand’ for internal mili-tary roles. A qualitative analysis of secondary literature and news reportsthen analyses the ‘supply-side’ of negative convergence: political leaders’willingness to increase the armed forces’ internal roles and the military’sreactions.
