- Villains actively and deliberately want to hurt and/or kill innocent people to get what they want. They chose to be evil. If you make evil sympathetic, then you’re downplaying everything that real-life evil has done.

I say one can give a sympathetic and tragic backstory to a villain without making the villain actually sympathetic. You can feel bad for the person they were, but who they are now is someone you can’t forgive.

At the end of the day, you need your audience to root for the hero, not the villain.-

I'll say it: I think its rly annoying and frankly amateurish that writers are constantly told their villains must be understandable or have sympathetic motivation to be interesting or realistic when all our big villains irl are in fact rich, stupid, selfish, trickster dillweeds and always have been

Some of the most effective villains in fiction aren’t sympathetic. Hannibal Lector, AM, Joker, Lex Luthor, and many other villains don’t have any reason to be evil besides the fact that they want to be cruel. And we have IRL villains are the same way.

- Yes. But in a society that’s normalizing fascism, having art that condemn such ideologies is important. No pun intended, but I appreciate Gunn sticking to his guns and tell the stories showing the evils of fascism and jingoism.

- Imprisonment without due process. Both Superman and Peacemaker season 2 feature Luthor and the government creating prisons to imprison metahumans without due process. When apprehended in Superman, our hero is even told he has no rights since he’s an alien.
