In 1908, Czech/Austrian architect Adolf Loos wrote an essay called “Ornament and Crime.” It is certainly appropriate and applicable to the design proposed for Trump’s ballroom. The title of the essay is especially appropriate to what’s happening in this administration.

The American Institute of Architects’ leadership has always been weak. Important issues like demolishing the East Wing and adding a bloated, gaudy ballroom should be addressed by the Institute and opposed vehemently. Instead, the spineless AIA sits on its hands with its head in the sand.

By knowingly avoiding this legal process, McCrery Architects are disobeying the law. Furthermore, their design is disproportionate in scale and character to that of the existing White House. McCrery Architects should be sanctioned and have their license to practice revoked. They should know better.

As registered architects who reside and practice in Washington, D.C., McCrery Architects (Trump’s ballroom designers) should know that all major projects in the Capital must be rigorously scrutinized and approved by the National Capital Planning Commission and the Commission on Fine Arts.
