On Itch.io Creator's day, a reminder that I have two collections available. Matcha and Birds (抹茶と鳥方) is a collection of poetry I wrote in Japanese in traditional forms, such as haiku and tanka, and the accompanying English translations. #haiku #tanka #poetry

Also, want to mention that if you want to buy a physical copy of my chapbook, I have less than 10 copies less, and I am not planning a second print-run.
Also will probably give some alternate English translations to demonstrate how even when I am translating something I wrote myself, there is some creativity in translating it into a poetic form.
Think I'm going to give a translation thread for one of my favorite tankas I have written this weekend, step-by-step explaining the grammar and vocabulary, and then placing it in the context of my life in the Boston-area.

if snakes looked like furbies we would have known this long ago
Picture an animal that huddles up with others when stressed, babysits its young, hangs out around relatives, and gathers in big groups every year.

Did you imagine a rattlesnake?

My latest, for National Geographic!
Caught on the RattleCam: a most unexpected snake behavior
For a long time, scientists didn’t think snakes needed each other. New research proves that wrong.

I've read that one. Doesn't a post-Empire dead-ender create a superweapon, and someone laments that it's no Death Star, to which they remark that by being so overwhelmingly powerful, the Death Star planted the seeds of the Empire's demise?

As the dread day approaches and the spirits begin to stir, now is the perfect time to hunker down with a horror novel! 😈🗡️

This Halloween, TFR shares twelve chilling tales from transfemme authors to match the mood 🖤

I made a typo in the first post that implied that this is the only copy of the zine in existence. There are actually 8 copies, spread among some people I know and some people I met at the 2024 Zine Fest.
In my defense, my Japanese handwriting is much better a year later.
Found out today that the Watertown Free Public Library has cataloged and made available the copy of the zine edition of my chapbook that I made as a 2024 Watertown Zine Fest special. You can find it in their zine collection on the second floor.
I'm Jewish and didn't understand the reason for this before, but seeing it laid-out seems obviously correct to me.
If you want to understand why Jewish institutional leadership is so out of touch with actual American Jews, you need to understand the funding dynamic of basically every legacy Jewish institution. 1/

Good thread
Shall we talk about ebooks?

It might be a bit of a weird thing for a physical bookshop to do, but bear with me. There's a reason.

Take a seat for a short thread. 1/?

My real question is how much trouble will I be if I send this to the people pushing AI at my university? I like to think just putting it in the local paper might be enough, but I’d also like them to stop.
Here’s where it gets personal for me. When I was 9, I started experiencing suicidal ideation … disinterested in living, and at least some of the time contemplating death and how it might happen … It’s easy to imagine how I would have used programs like these chatbots.
Perry: How can AI be used ethically when it’s been linked to suicide?
"It’s not on us, on you and me, to use AI ethically or responsibly. It’s on the companies to build safe, reliable, ethical products," David M. Perry writes.

If you have it please donate cash to the food banks. $10 in their hands will feed more people than the $10 worth of canned goods you can buy for retail prices. Also check on your elders. Many of them will not admit they rely on these programs so grocery gift cards or a surprise bag of staples

An understated reason figures like Newsom are so dangerous is because what really advances the most violently reactionary parts of the American state aren't just the openly far-right rulers, it's their successors entrenching what they did. Newsom types aren't an end to fascism but its completion. 🧵

The fact that some prominent Democrats defend a Maine Senate primary candidate’s Nazi tattoo while he isn’t even leading in polls, but not defend a NYC mayor primary winner from false smears even as he’s leading general election polls says a lot.

That doesn’t seem driven by voter preference.

Its really cool that more young artists are coming out and saying "it does not cost me much to do this, so it is the least I can do" when redirecting ticket sales and donations to trans youth charities around the country doing real, important work:
