Day 12:
Taking the doctoral title to the grave is rather bizarre, but: Hildegard Wegscheider was the first woman in Prussia to earn a high school diploma in 1894, and in 1898 she became the first woman in Prussia to receive a doctorate. In 1900, she founded a girls’ high school.

#31DaysOfGraves where grandma was born was not the most #Notable thing about her. It was her close ties to her family. When she died, a niece sent irises & I thought they were beautiful so nearly a year later when I married, I chose irises as the centrepiece of the bridesmaid bouquets. A memorial.

Urn marking the grave of John James Allen in Errol kirkyard, Perthshire. His grandfather John Allen bought Errol Park in the 1780s with the profits of business interests he sold up in Jamaica. This area marks the spot where the old Errol Kirk originally stood. #31DaysOfGraves Day 10: Urn
Urn marking the grave of John James Allen in Errol kirkyard, Perthshire. Grey stone classical urn on a large plinth. Dark trees in the background. Long uncut grass. The old parish school can just be glimpsed.

1st gravestone I’ve managed for #31DaysOfGraves Day 12 - Notable Woman. Agatha Christie’s grave in St Mary’s Church Cholsey, Oxfordshire. Not sure about the apple - maybe I could have posted it for Day 10 - Urn 😂

Day 10, Urn: Today I've picked this gorgeous example of an urn on the grave of Caleb Smith at the Old House Cove Burial Ground, in Twillingate. This gravestone dates to 1819, a fairly early stone for NL! There are at least 2 other stones in Twillingate of this same design.
#31DaysofGraves
A limestone gravestone with 3 ridges on the top. The central image is a large urn, in the Greek style, with a cloth draped over it, suspended on either side by a carved stone ring. The inscription is partly weathered away, but you can read 'In Memory Of Caleb Smith...February 1819...Aged 7[?] Years'

... On floor of the church lies a black marble slab “To the Memory of William Meggs, Late Quarter-Master in His Majesty's Royal Regiment of Horse” who died 5 Feb 1732/3 – and who had served under the command of “his much honoured friend Richard Knightley Esqr:” #31DaysOfGraves #OnePlaceStudies [2/2]
A large black marble slab on the floor of a church, which bears an inscription now difficult to read in places after centuries of wear under the feet of churchgoers. In full, the inscription reads: "To the Memory of William Meggs, Late Quarter-Master in His Majesty's Royal Regiment of Horse, In which he had served near fifty years Beloved by all that knew him For the many good Qualities That adorn the Gentleman and the Soldier. He died at Windsor the Fifth day of February 1732/3 Aged 81 And gave this last Testimony of the Respect he bore To his much honoured friend Richard Knightley Esqr: (Under whose command he served many years). By his dying Request to be buried near him in this Church Which was accordingly performed By the kind Indulgence of Lucy Knightley Esqr: And the Gratitude and Love Of his most affectionate Kinsman. Valens Comyn."

Day 9: Hand

I couldn’t decide on just one, this one’s a little more obvious but wonderful just the same.

Brompton Cemetery, London

#31daysofgraves
An ornate Victorian gravestone in Brompton Cemetery dedicated to Sarah, the beloved wife of William Bailey, who died in 1881 aged 49. The stone is Gothic in style, with intricate carved detailing and a pointed arch at the top. At its centre is a sculpted relief of two hands clasped in a handshake. one delicate, representing a woman’s hand, the other more robust, symbolizing a man’s. Below this, an inscription reads “In affectionate memory of Sarah,” followed by an epitaph. The monument has aged with time, showing weathering, and stands against a background of brick and other gravestones.
The clasped hands motif is a common Victorian symbol of eternal unity and farewell. It often represents a final parting between husband and wife, suggesting that the couple will meet again in the afterlife. The different cuffs, one feminine, one masculine, reinforce this idea of reunion beyond death.

#31DaysOfGraves – Day 10 – Urn

This lovely urn on a column is for Stephen Stapling and his wife, Rebecca (nee Darlow).
Stephen came to Peterborough from Ide in Devon. He worked on the railways, including a stint working for the Great India Peninsular Railway from 1861.
Marble half covered urn atop a square column. The inscription on the two panels read:
In loving memory of Rebecca wife of Stephen Stapling died 3 April 1913 in her 82nd year.
In loving memory of Stephen Stapling of Garton End born 26 July 1829 died 2 May 1900

#31Daysofgraves Day 12: Notable Woman what else can this Janeite offer on this 250th anniversary of her birth but Jane Austen’s tombstone in Winchester Cathedral? “She’s still there,” a guide assured us. “We peeked when we laid some new pipe and rerouted it not to disturb her.” #neatravels
Plain black stone engraved in white. "In Memory of JANE AUSTEN, youngest daughter of the late Revd GEORGE AUSTEN, formerly Rector of Steventon in this County. She departed this Life on the 18th of July 1817, aged 41, after a long illness supported with the patience and the hopes of a Christian. The benevolence of her heart, the sweetness of her temper, and the extraordinary endowments of her mind obtained the regard of all who knew her and the warmest love of her intimate connections. Their grief is in proportion to their affection, they know their loss to be irreparable, but in their deepest affliction they are consoled by a firm though humble hope that her charity, devotion, faith and purity have rendered her soul acceptable in the sight of her REDEEMER."

Das 12: Notable Woman / Berühmte Frau

Elena Luksch - Makowsy
1878 - 1967

„ELENA LUKSCH-MAKOWSKI 1878–1967“

Darunter steht derselbe Name in kyrillischer Schrift. Der Grabstein wirkt schlicht und würdevoll, eingebettet in eine ruhige, grüne Umgebung.

I spotted this yesterday, so here's a return to #31DaysOfGraves Day 4: Languages. Xaipe is ancient Greek and can be translated into 'goodbye' or 'farewell', ‘rejoice’ or 'Godspeed' for dangerous missions. Fittingly broad meanings for a tomb’s inscription. #Xaipe #AncientGreek #Edinburgh #Language

#31DaysofGraves #Day11 #Military A sad end for an old soldier, married to a cousin of mine. Happily, the stonemason was more accurate in naming the deceased than the newspapers were (this wasn't the only article that got it wrong). William is buried in St Duthus graveyard, Tain, in Ross-shire.
Grey granite headstone bearing the inscription: In loving memory of William Duncan McPhail Colour Sergeant A. & S. H who was accidentally killed at Edderton 23rd July 1915, aged 55 years
Photo credit: IC and TC, Renfrewshire Newspaper article from Aberdeen Weekly News, 30 July 1915 - RAILWAY FATALITY AT EDDERTON. Driver’s Unheeded Warning. Sergeant Archibald M'Phail, 13th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, was knocked down by a traln early on Friday morning near the churchyard at Edderton, and was instantaneously killed. The driver of the train had perceived the soldier on the line, whistled to attract his attention, and applied the brakes, but the soldier did not hear or get out of the way and was cut down, his head being severed. M'Phail, it appears, had taken the railway as a short cut to a shooting range at Edderton. He is said to have been slightly deaf, and this would account for the driver’s warning going unheeded. Deceased, who was 55 years of age, and belonged to Glasgow, was an old soldier, and rejoined his regiment on the outbreak of war. His remains were brought to Tain.
