Hi! Most common is probably not centering the theme enough. For example, this month is CANDLELIGHT. If you can change candles into flashlights, or oil lamps, it's not strong enough.
The other common reason for returns is the story doesn't fit Apex - best solution for this is reading the magazine!

Glorious Grannies: Mature Female Protagonists in Science Fiction and Fantasy

Science fiction and fantasy isn’t always the intrepid young hero on his first voyage to Mars. Or the naïve but strong and independent young woman falling for a magically attractive and dangerous fae lord. Although those protagonists are impressively popular, there are plenty of stories where the heroes aren’t young, fresh-faced, able-bodied, perpetually confused, and conventionally attractive. So please get to your feet and provide some thunderous applause for a look at protagonists with a brush of silver in their hair, joints that sometimes creak, and a fondness for quiet coziness in life:

Good practices - I'll just echo King here. Read a lot, and write a lot. And read the submission guidelines! I don't think you have to write every day or what have you, but breathing in and breathing out regularly is important.

I've been lucky to work with the kind of short fiction I really enjoy, and write novels about the things that excite me. My hope is to continue doing so!

Publishing? Probably that it is in any way lucrative lol. Most of short fiction publishing runs of passion and volunteering.

Editing? That editors are ALWAYS right. Experienced writers know to argue, but a lot of newer writers (myself included once upon a time!) are hesitant to trust their vision for the story over the editorial suggestions. That's all they are - suggestions! Even (esp?) when they're not phrased that way.

I think the biggest misconception about writing is the subconscious emphasis on ✨talent✨ versus hard work and persistence. It's a factor, but only one part of the path.

For the magazine subs, not high - we get too many submissions and prioritize moving stories through. For the flash contest, medium - if I see a positive comment from the first readers, I'll often take a few seconds to share. In general, though, the best place to get feedback is critique partners!
