In an interview with WWLTV just now, Helena talked about the way contracting out city services is actually more expensive than doing them in-house a lot of the time. This is one line from her campaign that I've always liked and look forward to seeing how she applies it.

I have been active in city politics for over 20 years. Very few people have impressed me as leaders. Arnie Fielkow. Joe Giarusso. Mitch Landrieu (yes). And we'll see, but I haven't seen staff like Helena's team since Mary Cunningham in district C. She has good people.

I been a gung-ho committed engaged voter since I turned 18 + I was VERY into local issues. My first local issue was the campaign in St. Bernard to switch to a council-president form of government from police jury. We lost, obviously, but that was my intro. Blame my involved parents.

I think I coulda easily done something similar. What saves me is my bookkeeping app which would’ve flagged the transaction as a duplicate. Me I woulda known nothin til all the packages arrived.

The shortest explanation for Helena's win is she was the sitting At-Large councilmember. She had the highest profile. She was not particularly disliked by anyone. And in those circumstances, voters tend to grant it to the candidate whose "turn" it is.
