It's such a specific choice to make Santiago hot, because in the book he's just a weird little creep. The actor Ben Shields nails it though, especially the Mr. Sinster-style malevolent camp.

Its a reference to a different old crazy vampire in The Vampire Lestat, who knows Armand is full of shit because she pre-dates him, so the minute the jig is up, does a little self-immolation as a treat.
