I prefer “anti-fascist“ for a host of reasons and this is a nice practical one.

I think we really should stop using antifa and just fully say anti-fascist and get them saying they are against anti fascism. Using antifa is giving them some distance and I genuinely think some of their base don’t even know that’s what it stands for.

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

A classic case of irresponsible both-sidesism from the NYT. The story is that Trump and MAGA propagandists are lying about Portland to incite a conflict, not that there are different views of the matter.

Lots of Epidemic Intelligence Service officers ("disease detectives") gone.
In-country staff in Africa (including those helping to manage the current Ebola outbreak) are fired.

“You might think of the dynamic here as something like rock-paper-scissors (or, if you’re a dork, like the sword-axe-lance triangle of the Fire Emblem series).”

Insanely brilliant analysis here.

Hard to find a more obvious example of the journalism adage “If someone says it’s raining outside and someone else says it isn’t, your job is not to quote them both, your job is to go outside.”

Yes, because that's how epidemics work. (Assholes.)

But why the CDC? I hate to sound like a naif but -- they get sick, too! Vought's daughter had MS! Is it to disable the population?

“For now, his administration can withhold some forms of congressionally appropriated funds, send undocumented immigrants to dangerous places such as South Sudan and use race as a criterion in making immigration stops, all because of emergency orders.”

Sounds bad when you put it like that.

The conventions of political reporting today are not well equipped to handle this concerted use of pretexts for instrumental purposes and the bottomless bad faith they employ. Grasping the industrial-scale deception at the core of MAGA politics is essential. 6/

"Career prosecutors determined that there was no evidence to support these charges. They were pushed out and replaced with individuals whose only qualification is their loyalty to a single man, not to the Constitution or the law. That is corruption. That is abuse of power...we must all speak out."

INBOX: National Bar Association President Ashley L. Upkins calls the charges against New York Attorney General Letitia James “unjust and dangerous” and a representation of "the continued weaponization of our nation’s justice system for political gain."

Fearless journalists & vigilant residents are telling Chicago's story. The shocking images show ICE agents out of control, people in danger AND people standing strong. Don't look away from this unprecedented abuse of federal power. My latest:

George was just trying to get to work.

ICE pepper-sprayed him, dragged him from his car, locked him in a detention center, and placed him on suicide watch. He even missed his young daughter’s birthday in the process.

This man is a veteran and American citizen. Don't look away.

A must-read post by @edeggans.bsky.social on finding news outlets to trust, and keeping them accountable. "The audience has never had more power over the media industry than it has right now," he writes.

After trading messages with so many readers asking this question, I pulled together a post on how to find trustworthy news sources. The bad news: It means a LOT more work for consumers. READ: https://loom.ly/lG92xgs
How to find trustworthy news reporting in these times?

UPDATE: In emailed statement to me / @reason.com, DHS alleges that WGN-TV producer Debbie Brockman "threw objects at Border Patrol’s car and she was placed under arrest for assault on a federal law enforcement officer."
Screencap of email from DHS public affairs: Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin:

“U.S. Border Patrol was conducting immigration enforcement operations and when several violent agitators used their vehicles to block in agents in an effort to impede and assault federal officers. In fear of public safety and of law enforcement, officers used their service vehicle to strike a suspect’s vehicle and create an opening. As agents were driving, Deborah Brockman, a U.S. citizen, threw objects at Border Patrol’s car and she was placed under arrest for assault on a federal law enforcement officer.

“This incident is not isolated and reflects a growing and dangerous trend of illegal aliens violently resisting arrest and agitators and criminals ramming cars into our law enforcement officers. These attacks highlight the dangers our law enforcement officers face daily—all while receiving no pay thanks to the Democrats’ government shutdown.”
