Garcia retired from teaching in 1945 and died in 1948. New Mexico State University has named a 45-acre research farm, a dormitory and other buildings after him. He was inducted into the National Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2021, the first Hispanic and New Mexican to receive the honor. /end

García is also credited with developing modern irrigated agriculture in New Mexico and conducting research on many other crops, including onions, pears, peaches, grapes and pecans. He helped bring wealth to the Mesilla Valley by helping farmers choose the best crops to plant. /5

García developed the first reliable chile pod and created new varieties, including the Sandia pepper, which helped launch the modern chile pepper industry in New Mexico. He also developed a “raised bed” method for growing chiles to reduce disease, which is still relevant today. /4

After receiving his M.S. degree ca. 1906, García became a professor of horticulture and the first director of the Agricultural Experiment Station. For many years, he was the only member of the faculty of Mexican descent. (The school was renamed New Mexico State University in 1960.) /3

García was born on Jan. 20, 1871, in Chihuahua, Mexico. He was orphaned at age 2, and moved with his paternal grandmother to New Mexico Territory. He became a citizen in 1889 and attended the newly founded New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. He received his B.S. degree in 1894. /2

Do you enjoy New Mexico chiles? I know I do. And for that, we can thank Mexican American horticulturist Fabian García, who has been described as the “father of the New Mexican food industry” because of his pioneering work. /1

Why are we warehousing humans?

For the benefit of private contractors to bill the government? To benefit crooked politicians who agree to the criminal activity of ice?

More than half of ALL government shut down days in the history of America have come under just one president.

Simply put, the man is a terrible leader.

I am heartbroken that this is what our country has become. I’m aware we are not what I grew up thinking we are, but we are now definitely an authoritarian monstrous regime!

Crimes against humanity are being committed at these “detention facilities “ aka concentration camps. We need to continue to raise this issue. Share it with your friends and family. They need to know the truth!

Although the Gentlemen’s Agreement was not a formal treaty ratified by Congress, it remained in effect until superseded by the Immigration Act of 1924. That act established strict national quotas and effectively banned all immigration from Asia. /end

The Japanese government allowed other categories of people, such as business professionals, to emigrate. The agreement also allowed for the immigration of family members, spurring marriages of convenience with “picture brides.” As a result, the Japanese American population increased over time. /5

Japan agreed to stop issuing passports for laborers wanting to emigrate to the U.S. mainland. In exchange, the U.S. agreed to discourage discrimination against Japanese immigrants, specifically by pressing San Francisco to repeal its school segregation order against Japanese children. /4

The Japanese viewed segregation as an insult, and Roosevelt, who had a positive view of Japan, saw the need to intervene to defuse the situation. The San Francisco school board would not change its position, however, so the parties came to a compromise that became the Gentleman’s Agreement. /3

San Francisco long had policies segregating Japanese students, but they weren’t enforced until after the 1906 earthquake and fire. There were only 93 Japanese students, so they were sent to the Chinese Primary School. Many were unable to attend due to limited transportation after the earthquake. /2

Today in history, 1906: San Francisco sparks a diplomatic crisis between the United States and Japan by ordering segregated schools for Japanese students. Tensions were eased by the “Gentleman’s Agreement,” an informal treaty between the U.S. and Japan signed by Teddy Roosevelt. /1

Rand McNally has redone the naming of Idaho to Qatariho! Great work grifting Trump and perma drunk Pete Hegseth. Making America like Qatar? Try telling us that this whole $400 million dollar plane donation and Trump hotels and golf courses in Qatar isn’t a grift.
