yeah it's really perfect for that

if you're going to confront Death or something a shore is a perfectly good place to do it, it just seems like someone had to have had that idea first

does (hat + man) equal (diphenhydramine), i wonder
segyges.bsky.social
this is what i am trying to get before actually! i have seen this motif at least three other places that are post-neuromancer and felt like it can't be totally original, I am convinced it's Bergman who is perhaps influenced by Wagner

Neuromancer is from 1984 and this chapter is about 80% of the way through
And then, somehow, they stood in the surf, the three of them, and the boy's gums were wide and bright pink against his thin brown face. He wore ragged, colorless shorts, limbs too thin against the sliding blue-gray of the tide.
"I know you," Case said, Linda
beside him.
"No," the boy said, his voice high
and musical, "you do not."
"You're the other Al. You're Rio.
You're the one who wants to stop Wintermute. What's your name? Your Turing code. What is it?" The boy did a handstand in the surf, laughing. He walked on his hands, then flipped out of the water.
His eyes were Riviera's, but there was no malice there. "To call up a demon you must learn its name. Men dreamed that, once, but now it is real in another way. You know that, Case.
Your business is to learn the names of programs, the long formal names, names the owners seek to conceal.
True names ..."
"A Turing code's not your name."
"Neuromancer," the boy said, slitting long gray eyes against the rising sun. "The lane to the land of the dead. Where you are, my friend.
Marie-France, my lady, she prepared this road, but her lord choked her off before I could read the book of her days. Neuro from the nerves, the silver paths. Romancer. Necromancer. I call up the dead. But no, my friend," and the boy did a little dance, brown feet printing the sand, "I am the dead, and their land." He laughed. A gull cried. "Stay. If your woman is a ghost, she doesn't know it. Neither will you."

ahahah. it's The Seventh Seal.

I have noticed sort of a pattern where a character ends up addressing a god or a supernatural being wearing a false face on a beach while in a dream or vision, generally towards the finale of a work. Is there an example of this one before about 1980?

gotta square it yeah, my understanding is that the order of growth being square is essential even if we are dividing by some n first
segyges.bsky.social
honestly leaky relu is much more intuitive to me and i feel like i want to try leaky relu^2 at some point
segyges.bsky.social
yeah that seems right
segyges.bsky.social
i think i made the omission because i wasn't looking at math i was looking at "publicly states agenda-setting ideas" and shannon was a quiet guy by comparison
segyges.bsky.social
like. it wouldn't have happened without Ada, or would have been much harder. but i cannot say Ada defines the field as it currently exists
segyges.bsky.social
i guess: ada constructed one special-case computer program, turing formalized the definition of a computer program, and this means that she invented the thing but when we go to check on "what is a computer program" we hit bedrock at Turing
segyges.bsky.social
so she started the thing, but what the core subject *was* was not established until the mid-20th C when we got the core theory all fleshed out
segyges.bsky.social
she clearly has priority! i basically see Turing as finalizing the core of Ada's line of inquiry, so when i go to back-trace ideas I run to ground at Turing, who mentions Ada but is not using her work, and people post-Turing-JVN-Shannon are all directly using and extending their work
segyges.bsky.social
she is at a minimum a very entertaining train wreck, okay
segyges.bsky.social
no you're fucking right i gotta take the L on this one
segyges.bsky.social
SHIT i stand very much corrected. okay, the male version of this at least be more obviously seen as problematic bsky.app/profile/phas...
phasebinary.bsky.social
the male version of this is andrew tate, and I hate to break it to you...
segyges.bsky.social
at the very least the male version of this novel would be fiction and much less easy for a million people to unironically decide was inspirational
segyges.bsky.social
no but it means that a lot of the people we elevate as inspirational will
