Elon Musk and the Trump administration gleefully shutting down USAID “has already caused the deaths of six hundred thousand people, two-thirds of them children.”

People throw around terms like genocide quite freely online but it’s hard to find other words to describe this level of man-made death.

i had to explain the fixation on Venezuelans to someone and i literally just said "the way Europeans talk about Poles" because it is the most accurate summary

who wants to bet Miller already has a site picked out for birkenau 2
okay venezuela as our Poland does track. we even racialize venezuelans in the same way

I work for an at least nominally environmental organization and a when a guy included a bunch of AI slop photos in a presentation everyone in the room giggled and clapped like infants amused by jingling keys. It was disgusting.
this is actually a minority opinion and most normal people love stupid infographics even if they are bad
I don’t know if anyone else notices or cares, but when I see a presentation in which the speaker uses obviously generated-AI images to illustrate their slides, it makes me immediately less confident in whatever other content they’re presenting.

"I was politically aware under Berlusconi 3 and Bush 2" apparently makes me an alien savant
"i was politically aware under bush 2 and i still remember it" seems like an incredibly niche position. having a long term memory makes you a freak in political discourse just as much as seeing the future would

This is an extremely interesting article about the collapse of early farming societies across Europe around ~5000 BC.

We like to think of prehistoric times as being largely peaceful, but it seems early civilisations weren't immune to ritualistic violence & cultural collapse.
Headless bodies hint at why Europe’s first farmers vanished
Wave of mass brutality accompanied the collapse of the first pan-European culture

francophone people everywhere have adopted the tactic of doing their religious repression laws in the name of secularism, which is funny because i swear the people advocating for that were all British initially

you know, what if they aren't actually a commentary on journalism or the state of media. what if these people are just extremely weird
