new S(ubstack)-Bahn post: I evaluate Japanese Railways' first years post-privatization and examine the conditions set prior to its launch to guarantee its success. But how does one grade such success -- and can JR be deemed as a success story?

What does it take to make a railway a "success"?

baseball is the best American sport because it captures the feeling of tenacious not-dying (despite wishing for death) rather the cheap, increasingly manufacturable sensation of feeling alive

I went insane watching the Mariners game at my Mariners friend’s game that I helped organize his entire DVD collection in alphabetical order

Free baseball? Never. It’s always subsidized by the taxpayers

I genuinely hope you have a great time reading it because I think it's a comprehensive look at a truly one-of-a-kind politician. I was moved to tears and laughed several times reading it

this book needs so much more love, I'm practically on my knees

the true sb79 heroes: those who called the governor 1-3 times bc they saw a mutual on here to do so

hm yeah. my math comment came from looking at OC (with the new streetcar coming in) and CoCo (with exactly at 15 with possible Hercules Capitol Corridor station on the horizon)? it looks generously carved out but it also got some elastic rope to stretch

I think we are in agreement here unless I'm not following

SB79 reads a bit like a Phil Burton legislative throwback: a Frankenstein's monster of a bill which gets just enough buy-in but nobody seems to have done the hard math on them except the author, Sen. Wiener. regardless, its effect are going to be transformative for California

this biography on Phillip Burton is the best book I’ve ever read about California, politics, and Californian politics. our own THE POWER BROKER

Gavin in his Japanese Railways era?

Gavin signing SB79 and not SB63 is one of those video game realities I want to experience once so I can turn off and start from my latest save

It would be kinda funny to pass the transit-oriented development bill and then not fund transit

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

one of the organizers: "we were all singing songs about the struggle, songs only we knew. regular citizens didn't know the song...then somebody in the crowd started singing Morning Dew. and everybody sang it. to hear so many sing together was incredibly powerful" www.youtube.com/watch?v=NK1b...
