y'all i'm running out of yikes
spees.bsky.social
tell me this is a data entry error. or weird browser caching. or a CMS bug. something, anything.

someday I'll take that sabbatical and do a language immersion course or something
spees.bsky.social
but I still wonder if auditory processing played a role. or if it was simply an issue of not being immersed deeply/long enough

and honestly, I probably didn't drink enough wine lol it's ridiculously effective

I know I spent more of my time thinking in Japanese my first few months there before I started teaching English. in France I was using English regularly from the start, and also taking Japanese classes alongside my French literature and writing classes 🤦🏻‍♀️

mistakes were made
spees.bsky.social
tbh I think the only reason my Japanese conversation skills ever seemed any good was because that was the easy part compared to reading and writing. but also because the bar is on the floor lol

or maybe my language immersion in Japan was that much more effective than it was in France?
spees.bsky.social
even when I was immersed, I didn't feel like I was improving after the first couple weeks
spees.bsky.social
it surprises me how well I can still read French a solid 15 years after I last used it regularly. I wonder how much my long-time struggles with speaking and listening skills were a symptom of not just memory issues but also auditory processing disorder

it's hard to tell if reading the text makes a bigger difference than listening to the audiobook. I switch between the two regularly for the same book

but I did read for several hours continuously the other night when I couldn't get back to sleep, so that might explain the sudden change

I guess I can be pretty smart when I'm not braindead 🙃

I've been repeatedly using SAT words organically in conversation the past couple days and I'm pretty sure it's cause of this

it's just wild how stark a difference reading fiction makes in my word recall in a fairly short period. surprises me every time

Let me take a minute to remind folks that Christopher Columbus did NOT discover new lands. These lands were already home to Indigenous peoples since time immemorial, they were never wild or in need of taming. We had language, culture and even a spiritual connection to Creator.

New from 404 Media: the Discord hack is every users' worst nightmare. Yesterday the hackers started posting Discord users' selfies, identity documents, email addresses, phone numbers, more. I watched in real time. This is risk of tech storing ID for age verification

Apropos last repost, another sleight of hand that gen ai proponents like Miller engage in is suggesting gen ai is like photography. NO.

In the past, I mentioned how they’re conflating perception with process to obscure gen ai being theft & labor exploitation and to alter what “photography” means.

They’re using a perception parallel as a process parallel. As photography was a technological shift some ppl didn’t like then and gen ai is one many loathe now, they claim writing prompts in a theft machine is equal to study, composing, creating & developing/post-processing photographs.

No.

the only big content warning i would give is if you have a severe fear of flying (airplanes), or if you have emetophobia

I knew of Kowal from listening to @writingexcuses.bsky.social wayyy back in like 2015-2016 but now I'm kicking myself for not picking up any of her books sooner

obviously it's not 100% (I'm not Southern and I'm a terrible Jew, among other differences) but I can't remember the last time I related so hard to a character whose life wasn't a complete train wreck (c.f. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend lolsob)

it's also wild how precisely it intersects with my background and experience

oh, a high-achieving American white woman of Jewish descent, who's navigating a stressful career in a highly technical field and becoming painfully aware of the glaring blind spots in her worldview?

hard sci-fi that goes hard. like damn dude

of all the industries to question emergency procedures for, air travel is an interesting choice. these policies were written in blood.

the airline is liable if the flight attendant fails to follow exit row procedures and the guy does cause problems in an emergency. it's an existential risk

At first the Discord hack didn’t seem that bad because it was initially the third party help desk.

But then you find out they had got there age verification data. Come to find out they got 1.5 TB of government id and age verification data. This is going to become a case against age verification.
