Renewable energy engineer. Offshore wind, onshore wind, green hydrogen. MSc renewable energy. Saving the world one project at a time. Militant vegetarian trying to kick the cheese habit. CCS and blue hydrogen are pure greenwash bullshit.

Exactly, and that’s why we need to replace fossil fuels (for energy, refining, everything) reduce energy usage, change our diets, & everything else possible to cut emissions as fast as we’re possibly can, it should have happened decades ago

@robwords.bsky.social have any languages been messed up, similar to English, by the imposition of the Latin alphabet? By comparison, Spanish seems remarkably consistent. Would German be better with runes?
stringofnumbers.bsky.social
Absolutely, and I have colleagues whose job it is to do that. But it’s not my specialism

We need steel for structures, copper for transmission cables, aggregate sand & cement for foundations. Lithium for batteries, not just for energy storage but for load balancing and grid frequency. It is, unfortunately, unavoidable

Saying the climate is too complex for tipping points is like saying your body is too complex to die. Complexity doesn’t prevent collapse…..it just gives you more ways to reach it.

My job is to ensure that renewable energy projects have the minimum possible ecological impact.
There is literally no development with zero impact, it is an impossibility.
Therefore your demand for renewables to have none is a de facto argument for status quo pollution.

"As late as 1975, General Motors was blaming the Endangered Species Act for transmission problems in the cars it sold. The automatic transmission fluid had been made of sperm whale oil, and the company saw no easy alternative." #climatesky

BREAKING 🚨: The world’s 250 largest oil & gas companies own 1.5% of global renewable power capacity.

Despite years of climate pledges, new research shows their real investment in clean energy remains tiny compared to fossil fuels.

Oil giants are NOT serious about the transition.

It cannot be made clearer.

If you continue to support the Harry Potter franchise in any way, you are directly funding the removal of trans people's human rights in the UK.

Ah yes, the ‘if renewable energy projects have *any* ecological impacts at all they’re illegitimate and, really, just as bad as fossil fuels’ nonsense 🙄

And someone needs to tell Jonathon Ross that he can’t pull off the Crowley from Good Omens look

Okay, fine, so I bought them both (because ebooks are handy). But I’m still wondering when I can get my physical copy signed

Ah, yes. However, he mentioned this distinction in the first episode. There a difference between clever and wise, I believe Mr Fry is not only clever but also wise

Lol the Nobels can't even acknowledge women's contribution to discovery. But sure let's acknowledge The Machines.
Headline from an article in Nature this week that states "Prizes must recognize machine contributions to discovery. The future of science will be written by humans and machines together. Awards should reflect that reality."

“Balancing supply is harder too: winter wind lulls can last for weeks, requiring backup power sources that batteries alone can't provide - making the system more expensive to build and run.”

This is just utter bullshit.
All power systems need back backup.
There are more technologies than battery

“Wind turbine costs have not come down by anything like as much as solar panels - down just a third or so in the last decade”

Wind farms are the cheapest new energy construction & turbine generating capacity has increased, so LCOE has decreased from ~£82 to ~£50
