Piltover is the City of Progress, but its politics are less than progressive. Jayce Talis, newly promoted to Councilor, is determined to change that, but the rest of Piltover stands in his way. By rooting out corruption and fighting for better conditions in Zaun, Jayce has placed a target on his back. After an attempt on his life, Viktor decides to take Jayce’s protection into his own hands, crafting a suit of metal and steel and Hextech. There’s only one problem—Jayce has no idea who the scary robot man who keeps rescuing him is, and Viktor is determined to keep it that way.

But as the danger around Jayce increases, and the Machine Herald’s renown and infamy in Zaun and Piltover grow, can Viktor keep up this double life? Or are the rumors of the Machine Herald and Jayce just putting them in more danger?

Meanwhile, Jayce finds himself torn—so much face-to-mask contact with the Machine Herald has awakened a burgeoning desire inside him that he has long thought he held only for his partner, who has no idea of his feelings. He knows he looks like a lovesick fool every time it happens, grinning widely and waving goodbye to the rest of the Councilors as Viktor drags him out by the bracelet.

Jayce squints one eye open and sees the machine bend down to remove the rubble from Jayce’s trapped ankle, then he gasps when it lifts Jayce up with ease, cradling him to his chest. Jayce feels his heart pound with fear and confusion, the being’s gentle touches just leaving his fight or flight more confused, and he squirms half-heartedly to try to get away.

i wonder if the hexcore would alter vik less here since he's still alive and actually willing to go thru with it? whereas the hexcore in s2 basically had to revive him....

They had thought that the core would be the key to augmenting physiology or extending life with the right sequence of runes. But perhaps it was the core itself that was the secret—after all, it was self powered and adaptive to any environment. Why couldn’t the core adapt to the human body?

It was this line of thought that had led Jayce to where he was now—reworking the Hexcore into a miniaturized version of itself, carefully restructuring it into a condensed, powerful reactor, one that can not just power Viktor’s new artificial organs but adapt to his biological systems as well.

That was the key—replacing Viktor’s lungs, heart and spine with Hextech-powered machinery and connecting it all to the most powerful magical device that Piltover has ever seen. It was risky, obviously untested, but Jayce knows it is their best—no, their only option.

this breaks my heart bc i absolutely understand where vik is coming from and if i were in his position, i too would try to distance myself. but jayce didn't ask to be put on the council, it was literally forced on him and now he's just trying to work with the hand they've both been dealt :(

“Oh you’re still—” He snaps his mouth shut and flushes, Viktor tugging his goggles up to frown at him.

“Science does not stop just because you seem to have taken a break from it, Jayce,” he says. Jayce winces, a pit of guilt forming in his stomach. He knows he’s been scattered, the newly acquired Councilor duties forcing him to run around all over Piltover in order to make meetings and set up contacts. He wishes desperately he was never given this nomination, but now that he has it, doesn’t Viktor see that he’s trying to do good with it?

“Real change,” Viktor says, turning back to the stabilization device. “That helps people in Zaun.”

“I—Vik—”

Viktor just hums dismissively. “Don’t you have a party to go to? You are dressed for it.”

Jayce deflates, biting back a sigh. “Yeah,” he says dully, then forces a grin. “Got any advice for dealing with the vultures?”

“Eh, I’m sure you have it covered. They think you’re one of them now.”

/Do you/? Jayce almost asks, mouth opening before he just exhales, exhausted. The conversation is already over, Viktor completely focused on his task.
