Quote from a WIP Fantasy Novel, Strings: "“I’m Enyo,” she said.
“Enyo. Okay. I still have no idea who you are.”
Enyo thrust the blue stone into the center of the circle, shattering it into iridescent dust. The markings began to shine. She hoisted her guitar against her shoulder and began to strum. The dust on the wall reacted to the melody, dancing and spreading throughout the circle, pulsing into concentrically circular waves. As the melody reached a climax, the markings shone brighter and brighter until it was blinding. Ellis squeezed her eyes shut. Enyo’s melody resolved and from the wall sounded a chorus of voices, at once inhumanly guttural and piercingly high. When Ellis opened her eyes again, she was standing in front of a glowing circle swirling with light. Inside the circle was a reflective black fluid that rippled to the beat of distant drums. It spread heavily, less like water and more like mercury. When Ellis looked closer, the fluid didn’t seem to be reflecting the abandoned subway tunnels, it seemed to reflect distant stars. Enyo turned to her again.
“Exactly who I am would mean nothing to you, even if you had the context I’d assumed you would.”
“That’s not exactly reassuring.”
“The storm-wyrm out there has scent of your Resonance. You can either stay here, and eventually be taken by the wyrm, or you can come with me.”
“This is stupid! What are you even talking about? What the hell kind of choice is that?”
Ellis took a step back, her hands shaking with adrenaline. Enyo picked at her ear with her pinky finger.
“A choice between certain and uncertain death,” Enyo said dryly, as if it was the most boring thing in the world.
How was she so goddamn calm?"

Old school portal fantasies used to touch on exactly this.

But somewhere along the way, we replaced the underlying literary, folkloric or fairy tale underpinnings of the portal fantasy... and replaced them with generic video game principles, and made the genre all the poorer for it.

Ever so often I'm tempted to write a story about isekai that actually takes the suicidal ideation at the very heart and conceit of the trope seriously.

Would you actually totally love being trapped in a fictional, simpler, unchallenging world? Is there truly no one you'd miss?

GUILLERMO DEL TORO’S FRANKENSTEIN was so fucking good!! had to drive all the way to tampa because that was the closest showing apparently, but it was so worth it. what a human movie, a deeply, radically sincere movie. fkn gorgeous too as expected from GDT

i think i write because i was never good at getting my feelings across, because it's easier to explain what's going through my head via a constructed fiction rather than interpret in a practical sense the absolute *spaghetti* that is my conscious mind....
or maybe that's just called autism,,,
