Its political buck-passing to try to justify Labour having no choice but to keep up the moronic charade of 'make Brexit work'.
- and as a confected excuse to try to suggest that it is Farage who has made Brexit a fait accomplit that UKG has no choice but to keep trying to fix.
The amount of underlying faith still in this lot amongst various commentators/analysts continues to be quite baffling.
As I keep repeating - it is a matter of opinion if it is actually a *genuine* tonal shift at all.
This is much more a political stunt by Labour to try to deflect from their own complicity -
You... have... beach... bars...for...up...to 90/180...days. End...of..

BUT:

Your...HOME...is...in...the....UK. Deal...with...it..
The EU has toughened up its Single Market regulations - especially after seeing how UK has trampled over them both prior to Brexit as a MS & in the attempts to get special deals from outside the SM since then.
Only the new terms will be acceptable. UK cannot return to pre-Brexit deals & opt-outs.
The EU will not agree to a bespoke CU with the UK. That would be tantamount to them submitting to 'make Brexit work' & allowing an agreement not available to third countries in general.
A return to the Single Market is the only path towards linking to such an arrangement.
That very accurate comment by the German official needs amplifying loud & clear by the EU as a whole to moronic UKG. Smash their zeal for constant transactional cakeism from outside the SM once & for all & force Starmer/Reeves at al to face their self built brick wall trap.

The EU are not going to agree a bespoke CU with the UK without a return to the Single Market. It would be yet more idiotic pie in the sky cakeism to try.
Alas, aside from Labours moronic 'make Brexit work' - the Lib Dems want to go down the bespoke CU road.

Labour is trapping itself in a new lie. Saying that the costs of Brexit are the fault of how it was implemented implies that you can implement it in a way that undoes them. Labour's red lines on the Customs Union and Single Market mean we have to live with almost all of those costs.

@anandmenon.bsky.social's new piece in the Guardian is ultimately very frustrating.

If UKG wants rapid progress, it should start by accepting the terms on the table.

Instead it quibbles over every detail and demands special treatment.

Well summarised.
Its depressing that you would think the Lib Dems would know this anyway. Or are they simply wanting to bend the rules for Brexit UK like everyone else. Though maybe ZP from the Greens is on a higher plain with this, like he seems to have got to grips with other UK issues?

On Zack Polanski’s Bold Politics podcast. Has Brexit damage gone away? No - we’re bleeding money & opportunities every day because we are structurally in a bad place now.
Right up to date Labour are as resolute about the idiotic red lines as at any time before this performative & phony Farage stunt.
But he doesn't oppose anti-Europeanism. His party have persisted/still persist with the same tactics as the previous cabal - albeit a politer version.
As stated, the so called re-set was a mug off to somehow be seen to be pro-active about mending fences when the same cakeism tactics prevail.
And b/c he owns it, and is in way too deep - he is going to keep every excuse under the sun going to justify having no choice but to keep trying to fix it.
Moronic ineptitude, pig-headedness, spinelessness, lack of humility and dripping in dishonesty.
Minimising/deflecting from their own bare faced complicity while at the same time time claiming they have no choice but to continue on the same path are the Labour priority.
As you say. Farage has managed to be a key instigator & caretaker over this debacle, yet has had no part in its legislation.
That is certainly a valid comparison. And as you say, equally ridiculous.
As enabled alongside the latest manufactured Farage blaming as a latest key excuse & deflection to allow them to do it & present it as a fait accomplit. At the same time trying to shift complicity & blame from themselves.
Labour have promoted 'make Brexit work' as their manifesto pledge through the so called re-set. Though Labour are deeply unpopular overall in respect of wider policies, enough people have been mugged off with 'make Brexit work' to allow them to continue its mantra.
Well with his faux outrage towards Farage after the 12th hour, Labour will milk this to line the pockets of their *only option* lie.
Turning themselves into victims when they themselves are as complicit in the straight-jacket as anyone.
Fed up to the back teeth for all the excuses 'to do nothing'.
Beyond the Starmer cult obviously.
