🧵

1. Ok I promised to post about what we can do to counter this terrible moment in US History and how to set about getting through the next 4+ years.

So permit me an extended turtle metaphor.

One day, near my house in Rock Hill, a “protected” forested green space was about to be razed to make…
A frowing native box turtle named Strange Peter. He lives on a hill, as a wild turtle, in the hardwood forest of our farm where he was born. He has a name because we see him often enough to say hello, not because he is a domestic turtle.

He’s not the turtle from the story, but is the same species as the ones we were looking for.

He’s is quite pretty.

Great example of a number four here, it seems.

Trump: "Portland, I mean -- every time I look at that place it's burning down. There are fires all over the place. When a store -- there are very few of them left -- but when a store owner rebuilds a store they build it out of plywood. They don't put up storefronts anymore. They just put wood up."

Fallen leaves do NOT break into your house and steal stuff! They are food for wildlife of all kinds and turn into rich soil.
Leave the leaves!

I adore it when a student newspaper gets the scoop!

The Virginia Senate just told UVA it’s not getting state funding if it accepts the compact since UVA exists to serve Virginia, its residents, & their interests—not be a tool of the federal govt. This time of year, when I’m not looking, the house gets more and more haunted.
Tissue paper ghosts hanging in front of a quilt in a stairwell.

Oh, good. He got out.

My question to those of you outside the US is:

Which country will give long term visas to US professors who will be targeted because of their research or the subjects they teach?

Contact you representatives and start advocating.

First, I am glad that Dr. Bray got out safely last night from the U.S. Good. Next, here's what you need to know/how to explain it to others. This is a new and extremely frightening stage.

I am writing this because it has swiftly become crystal clear to me that many people have no idea what is happening or how this works. Here is a thread for non-academics to put into context what just happened to Dr. Mark Bray, a fellow historian.

The minister in the photo is Presbyterian.

In my experience, that is the denomination most represented in social justice circles, at protests etc.

Although, in my area of South Carolina, the civil rights protests of the 50s and 60s were often planned at our Catholic Church.

I get that you are using the phrase in a metaphorical sense, but maybe you shouldn’t, since the literal sense isn’t outside the realm of possibility, given his history.

Pritzker also says ICE's treatment of peaceful protesters has gotten so bad that Illinois law enforcement has to protect them *from* ICE.

"We’ve got Illinois State Police standing in between ICE and the protesters," he says.

Yeah, I think protecting Bessent is a big part of it.

But I also think Argentina may be their backup country to establish a Techno-kingdom in if this one does not pan out.

We're spending $20B to bail out Argentina, but they cut USAID down to the bone, causing deaths around the world. The entire budget of USAID, the whole agency, was $21B last year. Shameful.

The Trump administration confirmed that the U.S. bailed out Argentina.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he had directly bought Argentine pesos in global currency markets in a bid to relieve pressure on the nation’s embattled President Javier Milei, a supporter of President Trump.
The U.S. just bailed out Argentina, Treasury Secretary confirms
The US Treasury has finalized a $20 billion financial rescue of Argentina, including a currency swap arrangement with the country's central bank.

South Carolina Gov primary news:

I’m reading a poll in Newsweek that has Lt Gov Evette in the lead, with 19.9%

Mace is second with 15.8%

Poor Ralph Norman is at only 9.3%

Bless his heart.

Funny the one people know the least about has the most support. 😂

There is NO good GOP option.

Seems like the news is getting to people this week.

Brain break! Here is a corn experiment we did with the kid while we were in Placitas, NM last month.

The left pot is fertilized w. MIL’s miracle grow; middle is plain potting soil; right has wild horse manure Kid gathered on hikes. 🌱
