It’s actually Election Day tomorrow… in Louisiana!

I’m watching: the New Orleans sheriff race, and the New Orleans mayor’s race.

Both in my cheat sheet of elections to watch this fall!

In its recent ruling, the Hawaii Supreme Court vowed to protect the due process of Hawaii residents; the majority opinion stated that the state constitution offers more safety than the federal constitution’s “suddenly fluid protections.”

The justices ruled that Hawaii’s constitution requires police to record interrogations. And they vowed to protect due process for Hawaii residents—unlike, they said, the Roberts Court.

Great writing by @guyoron.net in Bolts on the regional challenges with homelessness in Seattle and the Mayor’s race. Take a read!

NEW: One of the left's big opportunities next month is Seattle's mayoral race, & the city's approach to homeless has become a huge fault line there.

The incumbent mayor has dramatically scaled up sweeps, and his challenger is testing whether voters thinks he's gone too far:

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell has ramped up sweeps of homeless encampments in his first term. In his reelection bid, he faces a progressive challenger who wants to curb them.

To be clear, the stakes here are not partisan — Dems will win both offices

My cheat sheet identifies the contested races pretty crudely, but yes there certainly are — and there are a few other things I’m watching at county level too!

That’s why we launched @boltsmag.org!

Thanks as always for spotlighting local races that are hard to follow from afar

UPDATE: The new Prime Minister that Macron just named is... Sebastien Lecornu.

Lecornu is the Prime Minister who Macron appointed in September, and who resigned on Monday because he couldn't form a government.

I don't know what to tell you—situation has been risible for a year.

France still doesn't have a prime minster, as Emmanuel Macron promised a new name today — but it's now 9pm local time.

What we know: The center-left parties said today Macron made it clear he would once again *not* call them to lead a government — for now the fourth time since July 2024.

If you look past other parts of the story that looks at their records — including cutting right at the screengrab that starts with "But," or at what a clear difference is on sweeps.

This November, New York City voters are deciding whether they want to change the timing of future municipal elections to even-numbered years.

Similar reforms in Los Angeles and San Francisco have sent turnout soaring.
To Boost Turnout, Ballot Measure Proposes Moving New York City Elections to Even Years
When cities hold their local elections on off years, they tend to see terrible turnout. Many are rescheduling their contests when many more people go to the polls. Will New York be next?

two examples:

in Colorado's Douglas County, and in Texas' Harris County
Harris County, Texas | Cypress-Fairbanks ISD

One of the largest school districts in Texas, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, has come to be dominated by the Christian right, The Texas Monthly reported in early September, and some parents are trying to push back this fall, with three school board seats on the ballot.
Douglas County, Colorado

Conservatives enjoy a 4 to 3 majority in Douglas County, one of Colorado’s largest school districts, and the right-wing bloc has sided with anti-LGBTQ+ politicians and undermined a state health survey. This fall, all four seats currently held by conservatives are up for grabs (the other three seats are only up in 2027); while the elections are ostensibly nonpartisan, a GOP-supported slate (Keaton Gambill, Dede Kramer, Matt Smith, Steve Vail) faces a Democratic-supported slate (Clark Callahan, Kelly Denzler, Kyrzia Parker, Tony Ryan).

ICYMI: my cheat sheet to November elections has dozens of local elections that are critical for local power on all sorts of issues.

one thing to spotlight: conservative majorities on school boards are on the line, again, with key hotspots in CO, TX, and PA.

The GOP hopes to flip two swing districts in Washington's state Senate in November. In the first round in August, Democrats finished narrowly ahead of GOP opponents but margins were narrow.

You can tell Cuomo's campaign has cooked its brain on Twitter because it's repeating nonsense talking points from people like Andrew Fine and Reza who claim only rich people use transit.

As of 2017, bus riders in NYC earn an average salary of $28K, well under subway riders ($40K).
